Redhawks Close Out UCA Invitational

CONWAY, Ark. -- Southeast Missouri's women's tennis team concluded the Central Arkansas Invitational Saturday.

"This tournament was a great experience for us," said head coach Mary Beth Gunn. "We played several close matches. Some went our way and some didn't."

The Redhawks played tough day one, collecting a number of victories across the board. Oleksandra Doroshenko won her first match in flight 2 in convincing fashion, downing Missouri State's Phoebe Boeschen, 6-2, 6-2. Mila Majtan (No. 4) took care of business against Murray State's Sara Bjork surrendering only one point the entire match and winning, 6-1, 6-0. In flight 5, Anais Emelie picked up her first victory of the fall slate, 6-3, 6-2, over MSU's Ekaterina Donetskova. Annisa Warasanti took Oral Robert's Valentina Gisbert to three sets, winning the tiebreaker in decisive fashion, 6-7, 6-2, (10-4). Ana Canahuate-Torres closed out the singles victories with a hard-fought matchup in flight 7, beating Northeastern State's Emma Warnock, 6-4, 7-5.

Kseniya Zonova (No. 1) received a bye on day one. Isabella Krupa (No. 3) and Joanne Hollings (No. 7) each dropped their matches in straight sets.

In doubles play, Krupa and Doroshenko paired at the top of the lineup and finished the day 2-0. They swept ORU's Cornelius and Simeonova, 6-0, before taking down Arkansas State's Gaugery and Roberts, 6-1. Zonova and Emelie teamed up at the bottom of flight one, winning their first match, 6-2, over Northeastern's Parker and Tomiac. They would go on to drop the following match, 6-3, to King and Jeresic from ASU. Torres and Hollings received a bye at the top of flight 2, but fell in their first match, 6-3, to the Redwolves' Pisani and Quammen. Majtan and Warasanti played together at the bottom of the flight, taking both matches to put them in the finals against Pisani/Quammen.

On Saturday, Majtan came out strong and won the flight 4 draw. She rolled over Northeastern's Easton Parker, 6-1, 6-2, before winning the finals over UCA's Hai Ning, 6-3, 6-4. Majatn and Warasanti also collected the title in the flight 2 doubles draw after Pisani and Quammen withdrew.

"Majtan's final was a hard fought match in high heat, and she was able to outlast her opponent." Gunn added.

Emelie battled in flight 5, winning a three-set thriller, 6-3, 2-6, (11-9), over Northeastern's Tomiac. She would go on to fall to Ximena Puentes in a close final.

Krupa claimed the flight 3 consolation bracket, beating both opponents in straight sets.

Warasanti lost a hard fought three-set match in the flight 6 semis, 2-6, 6-0, (11-9), but later added a victory in the consolation bracket. Zonova, Doroshenko, Torres and Hollings also nabbed wins to close out singles play.

Doroshenko and Krupa defeated Murray's top doubles tandem in Chang and Schibol, 6-1, before dropping a heartbreaker in the finals, 7-5, to UCA's Ma and Ning.

"The finals in flight 1 doubles came down to just one break in serve. UCA won the coin toss and was able to serve first so we were always having to serve being a game down in score, which created more pressure.Krupa and Doroshenko had a great run to the finals, however, especially with a big win over Murray State's number one team in the semifinals."

SEMO will be back in action when it hosts the Redhawk Invitational on Oct. 15.
