TV ExposureSaturday marks the fifth time Southeast plays on television this season with its second game airing on the American Sports Network. The Redhawks home game against Ole Miss (Dec. 12) was also televised by ASN. Southeast's games at Memphis (Dec. 5) and SIU Edwardsville) were televised on the CBS Sports Network, and Thursday's home game against rival Murray State was on ESPNU. The Redhawks are 1-3 in TV games this year.
Good MorningThe morning 11 a.m. start time at Eastern Illinois Saturday is Southeast's earliest of the season. It is the earliest game the Redhawks play since they met Southeastern Louisiana at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 7, 2013. Southeast overcame a 12-point deficit to come away with a 74-73 win over the Lions in that game. The earliest Southeast played this season prior to Saturday was at Noon vs. Belmont on Dec. 31 in Cape Girardeau.
Just One MoreAntonius Cleveland, who ranks third on the team and seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference in steals (29, 1.5 spg), needs only one more to reach 100 in his career. Cleveland, who tied a career-high four steals against UT Martin (Jan. 24), has had three or more in four starts this year.
McGill Goes OffFreshman guard
Eric McGill scored a season-high 20 points in 33 minutes off the bench against Murray State (Feb. 4). McGill, who posted the first 20-point game of his college career, shot 7-of-11 from the field and did not miss a 3-pointer (6-of-6). He had five of his threes in the first half alone. McGill was a combined 0-of-11 from 3-point range over three games prior to that big performance.
Bombs AwayEric McGill's 15 first-half points against Murray State (Feb. 4) came on a flawless 5-of-5 three-pointers. As a result, McGill became the first Southeast player to make at least five 3-pointers in a first half since Corey Wilford went 6-of-7 at Austin Peay on Feb. 28, 2013. The Redhawks broke a single-game school and Ohio Valley Conference record with 20 made 3-pointers in that game.
20-Point ScorersAntonius Cleveland and
Eric McGill scored 22 and 20 points, respectively, in Southeast's 78-72 loss to Murray State (Feb. 4). It marked the first time this season where the Redhawks had two 20-point scorers in a game. Cleveland leads Southeast with six games of 20+ points this year. The Redhawks last had a pair of 20-point scorers in a game when
Isiah Jones and
Jarekious Bradley each dropped in 21 at SIU Edwardsville on Feb. 19, 2015. In all, four different players have scored 20 or more points in a game for Southeast this season.
Redhawks on National TVSoutheast and Murray State hooked up in a nationally-televised ESPNU matchup Thursday night at the Show Me Center, the third time in five years these rivals met on ESPNU. MSU hung on for a 78-72 win and improved to 3-0 against the Redhawks in ESPNU contests. Saturday marks the third time in four games that Southeast plays on TV.
Quick TurnaroundThe Redhawks have a short turnaround for their game at Eastern Illinois Saturday. Southeast ended its nationally televised ESPNU game with Murray State after 10 p.m. Thursday night and boarded a bus late Friday afternoon to get to Charleston for its 11 a.m. matchup. The Redhawks play four of their final six games of the regular-season on the road. Southeast's upcoming three-game road trip is also the team's second-longest since opening the 2015-16 campaign with four-straight away contests.
Series HistorySoutheast holds a slight 27-26 edge in its overall series against Eastern Illinois. The Redhawks won nine of the last 12 meetings between these teams. Southeast, however, fell to the Panthers in two of its previous three trips to Charleston. EIU beat the Redhawks, 78-72, in overtime on Jan. 26, 2013 and, 73-65, on Feb. 22, 2015. This will be the fourth time the schools meet on national television. EIU is 3-0 in the previous matchups, all played at Lantz Arena. Southeast is 12-15 all-time in Charleston.
Three of FiveThe Redhawks won three of their last five contests, earning home victories against both Hannibal-LaGrange (84-61 on Jan. 19) and UT Martin (68-60 OT on Jan. 24), and a road win at SIU Edwardsville (58-51 on Jan. 28). Southeast looks to end a two-game losing streak after recent back-to-back, six-point home losses to Austin Peay (86-80 on Jan. 30) and Murray State (78-72 on Feb. 4).
Newcomers EverywhereThere are a total of 16 newcomers between Eastern Illinois and Southeast's rosters this season. EIU has one of the newest rosters in the NCAA with six freshmen, two junior college transfers and one four-year transfer. The Panthers are tied for seventh in the nation with the most newcomers on a roster entering the year. Meanwhile, Southeast has seven newcomers, including five freshmen.
Last Time OutSoutheast battled back from an 18-point deficit to pull to within three with less than a minute left, but came up short in a 78-72 loss to rival Murray State (Feb. 4). The Redhawks trailed, 54-36, after MSU buried four 3-pointers in the first 3:42 of the second half. Jeffery Moss knocked down three of his game-high seven trifectas during that stretch. The Redhawks, who never led in the game, clawed their way back and managed to cut MSU's lead to three points on three occasions in the final six minutes.
Antonius Cleveland sent a jolt into the home crowd when he threw down a dunk off a
Jamaal Calvin pass, cutting the Racers lead to 65-62 at the 5:53 mark. Cleveland later got a steal and scored a layup to make it a 69-66 game with 3:37 left to play. Then, Calvin made two free throws to slice MSU's lead to 75-72 with 40 seconds remaining. After MSU called timeout, Calvin stole the ball from Justin Seymour and drove to the basket for a layup. Calvin, however, slipped near the low block and turned the ball over with 11 seconds on the clock. MSU added three free throws in the last eight seconds to claim the win.
Keep it Going KellumTrey Kellum has scored double figures in six-straight contests, currently the longest double-digit game scoring streak of any Redhawk. Kellum, Southeast's second-leading scorer (10.8 ppg) and rebounder (5.8 rpg), averaged 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds in that span. He also made 26 free throws in his last six starts. Kellum has 13 double figure scoring games this year, second-most on the team.
Road to 1,000Junior
Antonius Cleveland currently has 903 points in his Southeast career. Cleveland is 97 away from getting 1,000 points. He is averaging a team-high 14.5 points per game with double figures in 16 of his 19 starts this year. The Redhawks had a player join the 1,000-point club in three straight seasons.
Jarekious Bradley officially hit that mark in 2014-15 (vs. Austin Peay on Feb. 28), Tyler Stone did it in 2013-14 (vs. Ball State on Nov. 18) and Marland Smith accomplished the feat in 2012-13 (vs. UT Martin on Feb. 9). Stone and Smith were in the third year of their Southeast careers when they went over 1,000 points.
About Eastern IllinoisEastern Illinois presently shares first-place in the Ohio Valley Conference West Division with Murray State. Demetrius McReynolds (11.6 ppg), A.J. Riley (11.3 ppg) and Cornell Johnston (11.2 ppg) follow. EIU has put up 82 or more points in five of its last seven games.
