Tennis Finishes Fall Season in MSU Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Southeast Missouri's women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season at the Missouri State Invitational Saturday.

"We ended our fall tournament on a high note," said head coach Mary Beth Gunn. "It was great to see the improvement and growth in the players since the beginning of the season. I think we have learned a lot."

Oleksandra Doroshenko and Isabella Krupa opened up doubles play with a first-round win over Central Arkansas' Amiru Shimoguchi and Rada Manataweewat, 6-3. Ana Canahuate-Torres and Joanne Hollings added a victory as well, taking down MSU's Ekaterina Donetskova and Gray, 6-4. The pairings of Kseniya Zonova/Anais Emelie and Mila Majtan/Annisa Warasanti opened with losses to go into the consolation bracket.

In the first round of singles play, Doroshenko picked up a huge win in flight 1 against Arkansas' Agne Cepelyte, 6-4, 7-6(1), marking the first time a Southeast tennis student-athlete has knocked off an SEC opponent. Torres collected a first-round win over MSU's Alexia Meyer, 6-4, 6-4. Majtan added a thrilling three-set victory over MSU's Faty Khamissi, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. Warasanti swept Katharina Kah out of Evangel, 6-0, 6-0. Zonova, Emelie, Krupa and Hollings all fell in round one.

Doroshenko began round two with a loss to Louisiana Tech's Jazmin Britos, 6-4, 6-2, pitting her against Brito's teammate Marta sramkova in the third-place match. Majtan advanced to the championship in flight 2, winning in convincing fashion over Manataweewat, 6-2, 6-2. Torres and Warasanti each fell in their second-round matchups to move them into the third-place games on Saturday. Zonova won her first consolation matchup in flight 1, 6-4, 6-3, over MSU's Anelisse Torrico. Emelie and Krupa each added victories in flight 2 but would not play the championship against each other. Hollings would take down Evangel's Alina Schweizer, 6-0, 6-1, bringing an end to day one of the tournament.

Doubles and singles play both concluded Saturday. Doroshenko won her third-place match in the winner's bracket of flight 1, while Krupa claimed victory in the flight 2 consolation bracket, playing MSU's Alye Darter instead of fellow Redhawk Emelie. Majtan battled back in a a hard-fought championship against Lorenzo but ultimately fell, 6-1, 6-7(8), 10-7. Warasanti and Torres each dropped their third-place matches.

"Mila played fantastic in the finals today," Gunn added. "She has a true heart of a champion. She saved off four match points in the second set to make it to the third."

Both Doroshenko/Krupa and Torres/Hollings dropped their final two matches of the tournament to close out doubles play. Zonova and Emelie lost, 6-3, in the first round of the consolation bracket, while Majtan and Warasanti would go on to win two close matchups to take the flight 2 consolation championship.
