MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Southeast Missouri's women's tennis team recently competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Tournament, hosted by Middle Tennessee State.
The tournament concluded Monday with the semifinals and championship in both singles and doubles of the Qualifying Draws.
"I am very pleased with our level of play this weekend," said head coach
Mary Beth Gunn. "We faced some of the toughest players in the region, and we handled it very well."
During the tournament, freshman
Oleksandra Doroshenko made an incredible run in Flight B singles. She opened the first round with an impressive, 6-0, 6-2, victory over Butler's Jocelyn Koester. Doroshenko followed that up with a decisive, 6-1, 6-2, win over Taylor Culbertson (Wright State) in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Doroshenko took on Gaby Paul from Memphis, taking the match, 6-2, 6-3. Her run came to an end in the semifinals, falling to eventual champion, Josefina Zehnder (MTSU), in a close match, 6-4, 6-4.
"Doroshenko made history this weekend by making it to the Flight B semifinals; she played a very offensive style of tennis and dominated in her matches," added Gunn.
Sophomores
Isabella Krupa and
Anais Emelie also competed in the Flight B draw. Krupa's opponent in round 1 pulled out due to injury. She then competed against championship runner-up and conference foe Putri Dwinta from Eastern Kentucky, falling in the match, 6-1, 6-2. Emelie fell to champion Zehnder in the first round, 6-3, 6-3.
In the Flight B consolation bracket, they each won their Friday match to advance. Emelie opened the tournament Saturday, losing to MTSU's Lidia Burrows in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Krupa pulled out a close victory in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(4), over conference rival Phyllicia Hemphill from Tennessee State.
Freshman

"Zonova came close to taking the first set from Kentucky, and she played some big tennis to get in that position," commented Gun.
Doroshenko and Krupa paired up in the Qualifying Doubles Draw. They won the first round over Burrows and Holly Horsfall from MTSU, 8-2. They then dropped their quarterfinal matchup against Cindy Oest and Natalia De Ugarte (Western Kentucky), 8-3. Doroshenko/Krupa would win their last two matches in the consolation bracket, picking up wins, 8-3, over WSU's Brdicka/Cloern and, 8-7(6), aginst Evansville's Diana Tkachenko and Chieko Yamada.
Zonova and Emelie teamed up to go 1-1 on the weekend. They beat Butler's Koester/Eaton, 8-4, before falling to IUPUI's Samantha Mayer and Sara Sherif, 8-6.
"Only the best players get in the tournamentso every match is a battle. Everyone picked up wins this weekend and proved that we belonged to be there. It's a good feeling to pick up wins against teams from the Sun Belt, Conference USA, Big East, Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conferences," said Gunn.
The Redhawks close out their fall schedule this weekend when they head to Missouri State for a two-day tournament, beginning Oct. 29.
