Heading to Bloomington
Southeast Missouri's men's and women's track & field teams head to Bloomington, Indiana for their third indoor meet of the season.
"This meet will be the biggest so far this season," head coach Eric Crumpecker stated. "I expect 12 to 15 teams to be at Indiana. It's one of the better meets on our schedule, so it will give us a better idea on how we are doing. It's a good opportunity to see where our athletes stand. The main thing right now is to continue to look for improvements."
Group Success
Last weekend at the Missouri Invitational, Southeast's men's and women's teams each finished second. Both were able to edge fellow Ohio Valley Conference member SIU Edwardsville as the men accumulated 119 points and the women tallied 115.5.
Quick Start
Ayonna Cartwright's season began with first-place finishes in both of her 60m dash appearances. After running 7.63 at the EIU Early Bird, Cartwright set a season-best time at 7.60 last weekend, matching the top mark in the conference.
In other events, Cartwright took second in the 200m (25.44) and the 4x400m relay. Cartwright, Cheyanne Tunti, Jovannie Spears and Miya Dorsey clocked a time of 3:59.10. Last month, the relay group also notched a third-place finish at the EIU Early Bird Invitational.
Top Efforts
The Redhawks had multiple first-place finishers alongside Ayonna Cartwright and Chris Martin. Marc Maton, Jarred Pasley, Brannon Wright and Brandon Chunn joined forces to take first in the 4x400m relay, posting a time of 3:18.36.
Maton also earned the top spot in the mile run (4:12.45), while Pasley was victorious in the 400m dash (49.03).
Freshmen thrower Aaliah Herron won the women's shot put with a mark of 13.43m, as well.
Athlete of the Week
Chris Martin was named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Field Athlete of the Week for his effort last weekend. In his opening meet of the season, Martin took first in the triple jump with a leap of 50'11", ranking first in the OVC.
"Chris had a strong meet up at Mizzou and competed well," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "He was able to come through on his last jump and win the competition. It was a good early season jump to win and rank himself nationally."
Looking Ahead
The Redhawks host a dual meet against SIU Edwardsville on Jan. 29 at Southeast's Student Recreation Center-North. Last year, SIUE hosted the indoor dual meet which saw the Redhawks claim victory in both men's and women's competition.
