Anderson Scores 17 in Redhawks Loss to Jacksonville State

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Freshman Tony Anderson scored a season-high 17 points as Southeast Missouri (2-15, 0-5) fell to Jacksonville State (6-14, 2-3), 74-60, Wednesday night at the Show Me Center.

Anderson, who scored double figures for the third-straight game off the bench, made 5-of-6 field goals, went a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds in 22 minutes.

It was a tale of two halves for Southeast, which played much better in the game's final 20 minutes. However, it simply wasn't enough to overcome a slow start.

Southeast was without its top scorer and rebounder Antonius Cleveland who did not play due to a sore right wrist.

Offensively, the Redhawks shot just 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from the field and scored 23 points in the first half.

Southeast held a one-point edge twice in the first 7:38 of the game, but did not get ahead of JSU again after that.

Immediately following Anderson's two free throws with 12:22 left to play in the first half, the Gamecocks went on a 10-0 run to take a 21-12 advantage. Southeast went scoreless for 4:16 during that stretch.

JSU later closed out the first half by scoring six points in the final 48 seconds to take a 38-23 lead at the intermission.

Southeast managed to outscore JSU, 37-36, and made 51.9 percent (14-of-27) of its field goals in the second half.

The Redhawks pulled to within 14 points, but that was close as they would get. Southeast then scored eight of the game's final 10 points with Eric McGill knocking down two 3-pointers in the last 2:11.

Joel Angus III joined Anderson with double figures in the scoring column. Angus had 16 points. Isiah Jones followed with nine points, seven assists and two steals, while Trey Kellum added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Charleston, Missouri native Greg Tucker led all JSU scorers with 15 points as one of three starters in double figures. JaQuail Townser and Malcolm Drumwright also contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Two other Missouri natives in DelFincko Bogan (Charleston) and Andre Statam (Cape Girardeau) combined for 16 points off the bench. Bogan had seven and Statam added nine.

JSU, which picked up its first road win of the season, shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field for the game.

Southeast rounds out the East Division part of its Ohio Valley Conference schedule when it travels to Tennessee Tech Saturday.
