CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Southeast Missouri women's soccer team played host to Northern Iowa (1-0-1) in the 2015 home opener Sunday. The Redhawks and Panthers played to a 3-3 draw after two overtime periods.
Southeast is now 1-0-1 on the season after winning Friday's season opener at Missouri S&T.
The day began with a special presentation of a team-signed no. 18 jersey to Dr. Carlos Vargas, 18th President of Southeast Missouri State University. The jersey presentation was followed by a ceremonial first kick by Dr. Vargas.
Southeast found themselves with a 2-0 hold on Northern Iowa at the end of the first half.
Paige Blankenheim netted her first career goal in the 32nd minute to put Southeast on the board. Blankenheim scored from about 20 yards out off a corner kick taken by
Paige Luehmann.
Abby Klintworth followed it up with her first career goal in the 43rd minute. Klintworth shot from inside the box on a cross in from
Jennifer Antonacci. Klintworth's shot hit off the crossbar and fell in to widen the Redhawk lead to 2-0.
Southeast outshot the Panthers 9-2 in the first half and had eight corner kicks. The Redhawks had five fouls in the half while UNI had four.
UNI found themselves on the board in the 52nd minute in the second half. Annie Dale got one just over
Kindra Lierz and in to narrow the lead to 2-1.
Maddie Welch made it a 2-2 game in the 68th minute when she knocked in her first goal of the season off a corner kick taken by Katie Witt.
Angie Mann regained the lead for the Redhawks in the 81st minute.
Lauren Kaempfe passed it into Mann who headed the ball in to make it 3-2 Southeast.
The Redhawks would not be able to hold the lead for long as UNI retied it with a goal from Mary Brandt in the 83rd minute.
The score would stand to the end of regulation and through two overtime periods to end in a 3-3 draw.
This is the first tie Southeast has played to since Oct. 11, 2013.
The Redhawks finished the game with 18 shots, outshooting UNI who had 15. The Redhawks put eight shots on goal while UNI put seven on goal.
Natasha Minor fired off six shots in the match while Mann had three and Luehmann and Klinthworth each had two.
The Redhawks finished with eight total corner kicks while UNI had five. It was an aggressively-played game as UNI had 10 fouls and Southeast had nine.
Lierz (1-0-1) played a career-high 110 minutes in goal. Lierz had three goals against her but recorded four saves on the day.
Whitney Blunt (1-0-1) also played the entire 110 minutes. She too had three goals against her but recorded five saves.
Southeast Missouri soccer will return to action Friday, Aug. 28 when they host Evansville at 6:30 p.m. The first 500 students in attendance Friday will receive a limited edition Redhawks Soccer team flag provided by El Sol.
The Redhawks will play at home on Sunday, Aug. 30 as well when they host Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will be Family Fun Day. The day will feature free Putt Putt in the east end zone parking lot. There will also be free Andy's Frozen Custard to the first 250 fans in attendance.
