Redhawks Drop Doubleheader to SIUE, 12-3, 7-0

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – SIU Edwardsville (26-6, 8-1) used sound hitting and strong pitching to sweep Southeast Missouri (5-16, 2-6), 12-3, 7-0, in a doubleheader at the Southeast Softball Complex Saturday.
 
Haley Chambers and Baylee Douglass each pitched complete games, while SIUE's offense posted 28 hits in the two contests. The Cougars, who lead the Ohio Valley Conference in fielding, also went error free on the day.

Haley Chambers threw a complete game with eight strikeouts and had a grand slam and six RBI to lead SIU Edwardsville to a 12-3 victory in game one.
 
Chambers went 2-for-5 with a run scored and was one of three Cougars who hit home runs.
 
A seven-run second inning was the difference in SIUE's game one win.
 
Brittany Toney scored the first run on a leadoff solo home run to center. Whitney Lanphier walked and Tess Eby and Jordan LaFave singled to load the bases with no outs. Chambers then stepped in and smacked her grand slam over the right field wall. Rachel Keller touched home when Alex McDavid was hit by a pitch, extending the Cougars lead to 7-0.
 
SIUE tacked on another run in the third before scoring twice more in both the fifth and sixth innings.
 
Rachel Keller hit a two-run homer with two outs in the fifth and Chambers knocked in both LaFave and pinch-runner Kelsey Hansen on a two-out double in the sixth.
 
Southeast's biggest threat came in the bottom of the fifth when Kayla Fortner hit her team-high ninth home run. Fortner hit a two-run shot over the center field fence with two outs.
 
Chambers (15-3) gave up five hits and three runs in six innings. She also issued one walk, facing 27 hitters.
 
Aubrey Denno (0-4) took the loss for Southeast. Denno allowed five hits and five runs in one inning. Keaira Schilling pitched the final five innings, giving up seven runs on 11 hits.
 
Allison Smiley went 4-for-5 with a run scored and LaFave and Rebecca Gray followed with three hits each to lead SIUE. Eby and Chambers also finished with multiple hits.
 
The Cougars registered 16 hits and did not commit an error.
 
Alexis Anderson went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one run scored to lead Southeast.
 
SIUE 7, Southeast Missouri 0
 
Baylee Douglass recorded seven strikeouts in a complete game one-hit shutout during the nightcap.
 
Douglass had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings before India Davis got Southeast's only hit on an infield single to third base. Douglass retired 15 hitters in a row before Davis' hit.
 
Leading, 3-0, SIUE blew the game open with four runs in the seventh inning.
 
Allison Smiley drove in Jordan LaFave on a single through the right side and Rachel Keller ripped a base hit down the right field line to score Rebecca Gray. Alex McDavid plated the other two runs on a double to left center, capping the Cougars 7-0 victory.
 
Douglass (10-2) sat down 22 of the 24 hitters she faced. Savannah Carpenter was the other Redhawk who reached base against her on a walk in the first inning.
 
Madeline Krumrey (3-5) went the distance for Southeast, giving up 12 hits and seven runs. Krumrey finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and no walks, as well.
 
Southeast and SIUE wrap up their three-game series at 1 p.m., CT, Sunday.
