CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – SIU Edwardsville (27-6, 9-1) hit four home runs en route to beating Southeast Missouri (5-17, 2-7), 8-4, Sunday afternoon at a windy Southeast Softball Complex. The Cougars completed a three-game sweep with the victory.
Southeast took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Savannah Carpenter smacked a three-run home run to left field. Kayla Fortner and Lindsey Patterson also scored on the play, giving the Redhawks a quick 3-0 cushion.
SIUE countered with two home runs to take the lead in the top of the fourth and never looked back from that point on.
Shortstop Alex McDavid led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. After consecutive groundball outs, Jordan LaFave launched a two-run homer out of the nine-hole. Haley Chambers later doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a bunt single and scored on a throw to grab the Cougars a 4-3 edge.
SIUE added to its lead with another run in the third and fourth innings, and two more in the seventh.
The Cougars plated their run in the third on a fielder's choice and pushed their lead to 6-4 on a home run by Chambers in the fourth.
McDavid's second homer, a two-run shot, put the finishing touches on SIUE's win in the top of the seventh.
Chambers (16-3) picked up her second victory of the series after striking out four in seven innings. She also scattered six hits and gave up four runs.
Madeline Krumrey (3-6) took the loss. Krumrey also went the distance, allowing eight runs on 13 hits. She walked two, as well.
Carpenter went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, run scored and three RBI to lead Southeast, which had six hits. The home run was Carpenter's first of the season.
Patterson, Chelsea Smith and Shelby Eccles added one hit each. Eccles, who made her first start, tripled in her first career Southeast at-bat.
McDavid and Rebecca Gray both went 3-for-4 to lead SIUE. The two combined for six of the Cougars 13 hits. Chambers and LaFave followed with two hits apiece.
Southeast hits the road to face Tennessee State (Apr. 3) and Belmont (Apr. 4) over Easter weekend.
