CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri (3-6) heads to in-state rival and No. 21 Missouri (13-3) for a midweek softball doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., CT, at University Field in Columbia.
Southeast takes the field for the first time since Mar. 1, as inclement weather has limited the Redhawks to just nine games this year. The nine games are fewest of any Ohio Valley Conference school at this point in the season.
The Redhawks rank first in the OVC with a .342 batting average and have struck out a league low 18 times, averaging only two per contest. Newcomer
Kayla Fortner is one of five Redhawks hitting .400 or better. Fortner boasts a .481 clip with a team-high 10 runs scored, five home runs and 15 RBI. She is second in the OVC in home runs, as well. Freshman
Taylor McDannold (.452),
Nicole Deering (.429),
Savannah Carpenter (.423) and
Lindsey Patterson (.400) round out that group.
Meanwhile, the Tigers, ranked No. 21 in this week's USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, are on a five-game winning streak. Missouri recently opened Southeastern Conference play with a three-game sweep at South Carolina Mar. 7-9. The Tigers are fourth in the SEC in pitching with a 1.56 ERA.
Southeast is 4-26 all-time against Missouri since it moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in 1992. The Redhawks are looking to snap a 13-game losing streak in their series with the Tigers. These teams last met in 2012 with Missouri winning by a score of 9-0.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be televised live on SEC Network Plus.
