Second Half Rally Falls Short at Tennessee State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Southeast Missouri (7-8, 0-2) erased a 15-point deficit in the second half but it wasn't enough as Tennessee State (4-8, 1-0) earned a 62-55 Ohio Valley Conference victory Saturday at the Gentry Center. Jasmine Robinson led the Redhawks with a game-high 17 points while Connor King added eight points and 12 rebounds.
 
Briana Morrow recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers, who forced 25 Southeast turnovers. The Redhawks tied the game 55-55 with 2:03 left in the contest but Tennessee State answered with a 7-0 run over the final 1:46 to earn the victory.
 
Early on, the teams traded baskets over the first seven minutes as Southeast led 13-10 behind five quick points from Olivia Hackmann and four by Robinson.
 
Tennessee State then went on a 9-0 run to grab a 19-13 lead with just under six minutes left before halftime.
 
The Tigers took a 24-15 lead on a triple by I'mani Davis with 4:37 remaining in the first half.
 
King then scored two straight baskets to cut the lead to 24-19 with 2:56 left before intermission.
 
TSU scored the final six points of the first half to take a 30-19 lead to the locker room.
 
At halftime, King had eight points and eight rebounds to pace the Redhawks. Southeast shot 36.0% (9-for-25) from the floor during the first 20 minutes.
 
Briana Morrow led the Tigers with eight points in the first half. TSU shot 40.6% (13-for-32) in the first half.
 
Both teams recorded 20 rebounds before intermission. The Redhawks committed 18 turnovers in the first half while Tennessee State turned the ball over 11 times.
 
Yelena Rosado scored on the first two possessions of the second half for Southeast. Robinson then drained two free throws to cut the deficit to 32-25.
 
TSU extended its lead to 48-33 with 11:50 remaining before Allyson Bradshaw drained a 3-pointer to trim the margin to 12. Erin Bollmann and Hillary Lively added lay-ins to cut the lead to single digits at 48-40 with 10:18 left, capping a 7-0 run.
 
Robinson grabbed a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup, again cutting the lead to eight points at 54-42 with 8:13 left.
 
The Redhawks went on a 9-0 run to pull within two points at 55-55 with 3:39 remaining.
 
Robinson tied the game at 55 with two free throws with 2:03 on the clock.
 
Chelsea Hudson answered with a 3-point play on the other end with 1:46 left, igniting the game-clinching run for the Tigers.
 
Southeast shot 41.8% (23-for-55) from the floor from the game and 46.7% (14-for-30) in the second half. The Redhawks went 7-of-10 from the foul line during the final 20 minutes as well.
 
Robinson reached double figures scoring for the 11th time in the last 12 games and also grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists and made two steals. King reached double-digits rebounding for the eighth time this season, including the last three games. Rosado scored all eight of her points in the second half.
 
Chelsea Hudson finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for TSU but was limited to 4-of-19 shooting by the Redhawks defense. Rachel Allen added nine points.
 
Southeast continues OVC play at home on Thursday against Morehead State. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. at the Show Me Center.
