
Track and Field Vies for OVC Outdoor Championship

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri track and field teams will attempt to put an end to the Eastern Illinois run of five-straight Ohio Valley Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday in Edwardsville, Illinois.
The Redhawks men's squad is the only other OVC school to win a conference championship since 1995 as EIU has won 14 of the last 17 events. Southeast won in 1995, 1996, 2005, 2006 and 2008.
Eastern Illinois has won six of the last seven championships on the women's side with Tennessee State claiming a victory in 2008. The Redhawks women's squad had won four-straight from 2003-2006.
"We feel like we are in a pretty good place right now with everybody," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "We have had a good outdoor season overall. Right now we feel good about our chances going into the meet."
The Redhawks enter the meet leading the conference in 14 events, the most of any school.
"Anytime you are leading the conference in an event, it is a great confidence booster," Crumpecker said. "We have had some people do some really good things this year. I can't recall too many times that we have had that many people sitting at the top of the list."
On the men's side, Blake Smith leads the league in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.42 seconds and long jump with a leap of while Reggie Miller and Chris Martin each lead in the triple jump, having both jumped 15.84 meters. Miller also has the top high jump with a leap of 2.14 meters.
Chris Navarro finds his name atop the leader board in two events, the 110-meter hurdles and the decathlon. Navarro ran the 110 hurdles in 14.31 seconds while amassing a total of 6,577 points in the decathlon.
Kevin Farley has been dominant in the shot put and hammer throw throughout the year, owning the top throws in each event. He had a toss of 17.49 meters in the shot put and a throw of 59.28 meters in the hammer throw. Shon Kyle and Brian Grote have helped carry a very strong throwing corps as Kyle leads the OVC in the discus with a toss of 53.44 meters. Grote has the top throw in the javelin with a toss of 65.43 meters.
On the women's side, four Redhawks find their names at the top of the performance list. Rebekah Lawson leads all runners in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 36:10.68.
The remaining three is part of the strong throwing corps the Redhawks continue to show year after year. Kayla Gutierrez has the top discus throw of 52.32 meters while Courtney Gapelu has the top shot put of 15.42 meters. Bethany Pfeiffer owns the best javelin throw of 47.01 meters.
"The men are probably the favorites going into the meet," Crumpecker said. "We aren't 100 percent healthy right now, I wish we were all healthy. We have a couple of people just nursing some nagging injuries.
"On the women's side, I really think we have a chance at winning it. It is going to be a tough four or five team battle. We can't get too confident because we have a bulls eye on our back. We have to be ready to take care of business this weekend."
Friday's events kickoff with the decathlon at 9 a.m., field events at noon and running events at 3 p.m. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the decathlon, 11 a.m. for field events and 2 p.m. for running events. The meet will be streamed in its entirety on the OVC Digital Network.
