Redhawks Lead OVC Championship After Day One

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri track and field teams have the rest of the field looking up at them after the first day of the Ohio Valley Conference Championships in Edwardsville, Ill.
The Redhawks men's team scored 81 points to hold an 8.5 point lead over Eastern Illinois while the women's squad scored 57 points, with a 5.5 point lead over EIU.
"We've got ourselves in good position to do well as a team tomorrow," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "We have to show up and compete like we did today.
"Our women really competed well. We had a couple of hiccups here and there but we picked up the slack in other places. We came out of today where we felt like we should be."
Although the men are holding the lead, Crumpecker felt it could have be larger.
"We gave up a few points today," Crumpecker added. "We have to show up tomorrow and have a good day."
Kayla Gutierrez gave the Redhawks their first victory of the meet with the gold medal in the discus. The sophomore had a toss of 49.66 meters to claim victory. Sarah Hall earned the silver medal with a toss of 44.64 meters.
Shon Kyle made it a clean sweep in the discus for Southeast, claiming the victory with a personal best 54.03 meters. Jason Walker joined Kyle on the podium with a third place showing. Walker had a toss of 49.90 meters.
Kevin Farley and Zach Horrel each garnered points for the Redhawks with sixth and seventh place showings, respectively. Farley had a toss of 48.67 meters while Horrel's heave went a personal-best 46.50 meters.
Bethany Pfeiffer claimed the championship in the javelin throw with a toss of 44.13 meters, nearly three meters better than the second place finisher. Courtney Gapelu finished in seventh place with a toss of 36.11 meters.
Brian Grote then made it a clean sweep in the javelin with a toss of 61.28 meters to claim the gold medal. Chris Navarro helped make it a back-to-back finish with a throw of 59.74 meters. Alexander Eichorn also gave the Redhawks team points with a sixth place finish with a throw of 55.21 meters.
Jordon Jeffers gave the Redhawks a fourth place finish in the pole vault. Jeffers vaulted 4.25 meters, a season best. On the women's side Erica Grajales also finished in fourth place with a vault of 3.50 meters.
In the steeplechase, Charles Johnson just missed the podium in a fourth place finish of 9:29.08. Shane Brown finished in seventh place in 9:48.98 followed by Tyson Stoverink in 9:48.98.
On the women's side, Mary Dohogne finished in eighth place. She had a season-best time of 11:23.52.
In the women's long jump, Jessica Brown claimed a sixth place finish with a leap of 5.70 meters.
On the men's side, Blake Carter finished in second place with a jump of 7.56 meters. Blake Smith finished with the bronze medal with a jump of 7.55 meters. Also garnering team points for Southeast was Chris Martin in eighth place with a jump of 7.01 meters.
Macy Ritter claimed the silver medal in the high jump. She had a season-best jump of 1.65 meters.
A jump of 2.05 meters gave Reggie Miller the bronze medal in the high jump. Jacob Kent finished in sixth place with a leap of 2.00 meters.
In the final race of the competitions first day, Rebekah Lawson placed fourth in the 10,000-meter run. She led for two-thirds of the race and clocked in at 36:27.43. Gloria Westlake finished in fifth place while Melanie Lacey claimed eighth.
Halfway through the decathlon, Chris Martin holds a slim lead over Chris Navarro. Martin has 3,489 points powered behind victories in the 100-meter dash and the long jump. Navarro finished in second place in both events.
Navarro then claimed the victory in shot put while Martin finished third. Both men claimed victory in the pole vault while Martin finished fifth and Navarro sixth in the 400-meter dash.
In the heptathlon, Ritter is in third place through four events. Ritter won the high jump and placed second in the shot put. A fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash and an eighth place showing in the 100-meter hurdle gives her 2,754 points heading into the final three events Saturday.
In preliminary races, the Redhawks saw Navarro qualify second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.8 seconds while Mike Peters qualified fifth in 14.98 seconds.
Mike Peters will enter the 400-meter hurdles as the favorite after qualifying number one in a time of 52.83 seconds and winning his heat.
Joining Peters as the favorite, Prenecia Ponds was the top qualifier in the 200-meter dash. She had a time of 24.15 seconds to win her heat and set a season-best time.
Cheyenne Tunti qualified fourth in the women's 400-meter dash while Prenecia Ponds qualified third in the 100-meter dash in 11.99 seconds. Ayonna Cartwright will join Ponds in the 100 with a time of 12.20 seconds. Ellis Maise claimed the final qualifying spot in the men's 400-meter dash with a time for 50.42 seconds.
Kendrick Farr claimed the final qualifying spot in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.14 seconds.
The second and final day resumes Saturday with the decathlon at 9 a.m., field events at 11 a.m. and running events at 2 p.m. The OVC Digital Network will stream the meet, as the Redhawks men will be looking for their first outdoor championships since 2008 while the women will be looking to claim their first since 2006.
