Personal Bests Set Pace at A-State Red Wolves Open

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team had a good start to the Arkansas State Red Wolves Open Friday in Jonesboro, Ark. The Redhawks saw several personal bests and two individual victories.
The hammer throw started the afternoon for the Redhawks as Kevin Farley set a personal best and upped his OVC top throw to 59.28 meters. Farley finished in fourth place in the event. Seth Sievers and Shon Kyle each had personal best throws. Sievers had a toss of 53.50 meters while Kyle had a toss of 53.07 meters. Sievers' toss now ranks him third in the OVC. Kyle's toss maintains a fifth-place showing but widens the game between fifth and sixth.
"They threw really well," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "It was a good start to the meet. I have been waiting for Shon and Seth to make a big step. It has been something they have been close to doing."
On the women's side, Kayla Gutierrez was the top collegiate finisher and second overall with a throw of 57.17 meters. Sarah Hall finished in fourth place with a heave of 54.89 meters.
Bethany Pfeiffer claimed first place in the javelin throw with a toss of 42.69 meters while Brian Grote claimed the bronze medal with a toss of 59.94 meters.
Charles Johnson shaved over 10 seconds off his personal best in the steeplechase in a second place finish in a time of 9:18.20. Johnson's time also ranks second in the OVC this year. Shane Brown finished fourth in the event in 9:43.84 while Ryan Anderson crossed the finish line in 10:03.76.
The final day of the open begins at 11 a.m. Saturday with both field and running events.
