
Martin Posts Third-Best Triple Jump in West Region

JONESBORO, Ark. – In its final tune-up before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships next weekend, the Southeast Missouri track and field team had many personal records and strong performances Saturday at the Arkansas State Red Wolves Open.
"We had a lot of good performances this weekend," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "Everyone is doing well and we are just looking ahead to next weekend now."
Chris Martin picked up his first event victory of the season in the triple jump with a personal best 15.84 meters. The mark ties him with teammate Reggie Miller atop the OVC leaders heading into the OVC Championships next weekend. The personal best also ranks third in the NCAA West Region.
"Chris tied the mark that Reggie set last weekend at Auburn," Crumpecker said. "It is incredible that they are both tied for third in the west region."
Kayla Gutierrez became just the second women's athlete at Southeast to break 170 feet in the women's discus throw. Gutierrez had a toss of 52.32 meters in a third place finish. The mark ranks as second best in school history and further increases her lead in the OVC.
On the men's side of the discus throw, Shon Kyle finished in fourth place with a toss of 53.44 meters. The mark is a personal best and also increases his lead in the OVC this year.
In the pole vault, Christian Locke moved into third place on the OVC performance list with a second place showing. He had a vault of 4.97 meters, which is also an outdoor personal best.
In an eighth place finish, Erica Grajales set an outdoor personal best with a vault of 3.67 meters.
Jessica Brown set an outdoor personal best in the long jump. She had a leap of 5.89 meters to finish in second place. Ahshane Johnson claimed fifth place with a leap of 5.70 meters.
In the same event, Martin had a personal best of 7.23 meters to finish in seventh place.
Prenecia Ponds had another strong showing in the 100 and 200-meter sprints. Ponds crossed the finish line in 11.87 seconds in the 100 to finish in second place. In the 200, Ponds finished in third place in 24.5 seconds.
Continuing in the sprints, Cheyenne Tunti had a third place finish in the 400-meter dash. Her time of 55.85 seconds is also a personal best.
Colten Strotheide had a third place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Strotheide crossed the finish line in 4:05.47.
Chante Mosby claimed fourth place in the high jump with a leap of 1.66 meters. On the men's side, Reggie Miller claimed sixth place with a leap of 2.06 meters.
In the 4x100 meter relay, the squad consisting of Ayonna Cartwright, Prenecia Ponds, Chelsea Miller and Cheyenne Tunti finished in second place in 46.57 seconds.
The Redhawks return to action on Friday at the OVC Championships hosted by SIU-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill.
