CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team has one final tune-up this weekend before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships May 3 and 4. The Redhawks travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Arkansas State Red Wolves Open beginning Friday and concluding Saturday.
"We are hoping everyone will stay sharp," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "It's the last chance to improve a little bit.
"Everyone is going to race but a lot of the distance runners will do a shorter race, sprinters won't do a lot of races. Right now it is just making sure everyone is healthy and ready for next week."
Eight events will be competed on Friday starting with the men's hammer throw at 3 p.m. Saturday's events kickoff Saturday at 11 a.m. with the women's long jump and women's 4x100 relay.
Kayla Gutierrez enters the weekend fresh off the OVC Field Athlete of the Week honors, after she crushed the school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.3 meters at the War Eagle Invitational last weekend.
Rebekah Lawson enters the weekend atop the leader board in the 10,000-meter run as she set the top mark of 36.10.68 at the Kansas Relays last weekend.
Reggie Miller and Kevin Farley also set top marks at the War Eagle Invite. Miller had a leap of 15.84 meters in the triple jump while Farley hit the top spot in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.46 meters.
Each athlete is also in a fight to get into the top-48 in the West Region to qualify for the NCAA West Prelims May 29-31. If the season ended today, a total of 13 individuals would represent the Redhawks in Fayetteville, Ark., led by Miller who ranks third in the triple jump.
But Southeast isn't looking too far ahead with the OVC Championships looming.
"I'm happy with where we are at for the most part," Crumpecker said. "Right now, it is just about consistency and staying sharp into next weekend."
