CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri baseball team fell to Eastern Illinois (12-27, 6-12 OVC) Saturday, 10-3, in the final game of the series. The Redhawks fall to 27-12 and 17-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play.
"Greenfield has plus stuff and we knew if he could find the strike zone and take command of it, it'd be a low-scoring game," said Steve Bieser. "We kept him in check for a little bit then their offense erupted. He kept us off-stride all game and we never could string anything together."
For the third time in the series, Southeast Missouri scored first. Matt Tellor hit a two out double. Derek Gibson drove in Tellor with a single to left center, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead.
A double, a single, and a home run by Brant Valach gave Eastern Illinois a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
An RBI single up the middle by Demetre Taylor scored another for EIU. With two runners still on and two out, Valach stepped in and blasted his second three-run home run of the game, putting EIU up 7-1 in the seventh.
Scott Mitchell drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. He scored from first on a Cole Ferguson double down the left field line, 7-2 Panthers.
The Panthers tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning. A bases loaded hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI sac bunt made it 10-2 EIU.
Down 10-2 going to the bottom of the ninth, the Redhawks weren't going down without a fight. All with two out, pinch hitter Clayton Evans doubled to right center. The centerfielder's throw was off the mark and it allowed Evans to take third on the error. Pinch hitter Alex Burridge laid down a bunt for a hit to put runners on the corners. Branden Boggetto singled to center field to score Evans and make the score 10-3.
The Redhawk rally came to a close as EIU was able to avoid the sweep with the 10-3 win over Southeast.
Southeast and EIU both had nine hits in the game.
Tellor and Gibson were both 2-for-4. Gibson had one RBI.
Travis Hayes (5-1) suffered his first loss of the 2014 season. Hayes worked six and two thirds innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. A total of four Redhawk pitchers were used out of the bullpen.
Bieser added, "I thought Travis threw the ball okay today; it wasn't his best outing. They capitalized on a couple of his mistakes in the seventh and they hit the ball extremely hard. He did enough to keep us in the game, we just couldn't back him up offensively.
"Our bullpen wasn't that sharp today. However, it was good to see Perry Middleton and Garret Stockton come in and throw the ball well though. They needed a solid outing on the mound."
Valach finished 3-for-5 with six RBI off his two home runs. Tyler Schweigert and Taylor both had two hits for the Panthers.
Joe Greenfield (5-2) picked up the win. Greenfield pitched eight complete innings, shutting down the Redhawks throughout. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out four.
The Redhawks travel across the Mississippi River Tuesday to head to Carbondale, Ill. for a showdown with the Salukis of Southern Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Listen in on ESPN 92.9 FM.
