
Redhawks Cap Off Strong Weekend at Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Closing out the Tennessee Relays powered by Sea Ray on Saturday, the Southeast Missouri track and field team continued its weekend of setting top marks in the Ohio Valley Conference.
"This caps off a pretty good weekend," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "Everything went about as good as it could here."
In the discus invite, a special flight for the meets top throwers, Kevin Farley threw the top throw in the OVC this season with a toss of 50.23 meters. Farley finished in seventh place, and the mark was just off his career-best.
Fresh off his victory and personal best at the Joey Haines Invite last weekend, Brian Grote continues to improve with a toss of 65.43 meters to finish sixth. The mark, which is a new personal best, gives him an even larger margin as the top throw in the Ohio Valley Conference this year.
Increasing her lead in the OVC in the women's javelin throw, Bethany Pfeiffer threw a career best toss of 47.01 meters. The mark was good enough for third place overall and second of the collegiate competitors, also ranking as the third-best throw in school history.
In another OVC-best performance, Blake Smith took second place in the long jump with a leap of 7.69 meters. The jump also ranks fifth in the NCAA West Region entering the weekend.
Blake Carter finished in 12th place with a leap of 7.03 meters.
The women's shot put saw Courtney Gapelu up her OVC-best throw to 15.42 meters while finishing with the bronze medal. Sarah Hall claimed seventh place with a throw of 14.26 meters while Kayla Gutierrez finished in ninth place with a throw of 13.80 meters.
Reggie Miller had another strong showing in the high jump with a leap of 2.10 meters, finishing with the silver medal.
Running the steeplechase for the first time this year, Charles Johnson crossed the finish line in 11th place with a time of 9:29.76. That mark ranks as second best in the OVC this season.
Mary Dohogne also competed in the steeplechase for the first time this year, with a time of 11:35.93 to finish 14th.
In the 4x100 women's relay, the squad of Ayonna Cartwright, Prenecia Ponds, Jessica Brown and Cheyenne Tunti finished in seventh place in a time of 46.47 seconds. The mark currently ranks third in the OVC this season.
"I'm just really happy with the way everyone competed," Crumpecker said. "We got a lot of good work in and a lot of good things happened. We are in a good position midway through the outdoor season."
The Redhawks have two tune-up meets remaining before the OVC Outdoor Championships, beginning with the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University next weekend. The Redhawks will compete Friday and Saturday in Auburn, Ala.
