LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team began a three-day meet weekend Thursday with the distance squad at the Kansas Relays.
Rebekah Lawson led from start to finish in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 36:10.68. That time is the fastest in the Ohio Valley Conference this season by more than 13 seconds.
"She led all 25 laps and it ranks her in the top 40 in the region," Southeast distance coach Ryan Lane said. "Quite honestly, I think she is ready to do quite a bit better than that. Her fastest mile of the race was her last mile, so she had more in the tank."
Gloria Westlake finished in seventh place in the 5,000-meter run in 17:35.01, marking a season-best time. Teammate Melanie Lacey finished in 12th place in 18:10.28, also a season best.
"Gloria has been training real hard and has quite a bit more room for improvement," Lane said. "That was a career best and will continue to run faster as well."
Lacey's time also marked a personal best.
Tyson Stoverink claimed a ninth place finish in the steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 9:51.26. The mark improves on his season best and ranks as the sixth-best run in the OVC this year.
"Tyson ran well," Lane added. "It was the second week in a row with a massive kick as he continues to learn the event. We are expecting big things from him in two weeks (at the OVC meet)."
In the same event, except on the women's side, Kristen Richardet claimed a 10th place finish in 12:05.00.
Alyssa Rebecca had a 13th place showing in the 1,500-meter run, with her season best at 4:49.44.
The Redhawks distance runners are back in action in Kansas tomorrow while the rest of the squad will begin day one of the War Eagle Invitational, hosted by Auburn University in Auburn, Ala.
