
Redhawks Continue Ascent Up OVC Performance List at Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri track and field team continued its many successes of the season Friday at the Tennessee Relays powered by Sea Ray in Knoxville, Tenn.
"It was a good day today," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "We had a lot of personal records, improved our standings in the OVC. Hopefully tomorrow we can come out and finish strong."
Blake Smith continued his torrid stretch with a third place finish in the 100-meter dash. Smith crossed the finish line in a personal-best 10.42 seconds, a mark that ranks seventh in school history and moves the junior into a tie at the top of the leader board in the OVC.
Reggie Miller and Chris Martin had back-to-back finishes in the triple jump to finish second and third, respectively. Miller had a leap of 15.58 meters to claim the silver and further his top mark in the OVC. It also ranks in the top-ten list at Southeast.
Martin's leap of 15.49 meters ties his career-best in the bronze medal jump.
Shon Kyle got his day started with a monster throw of 53.01 meters in the discus, a mark that ranks fifth all-time at Southeast. The throw is also tops in the Ohio Valley Conference this season and placed him in second place in the meet.
Jason Walker, whom Shon passed for the OVC lead, had a personal-best throw of 51.54 meters and a fourth-place finish.
The women's discus throw saw Sarah Hall finish in sixth place with a toss of 43.13 meters. Courtney Gapelu was just behind Hall in eighth place with a toss of 40.78 meters.
Prenecia Ponds had a season-best in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 24.16 seconds. The time placed her eighth overall and currently ranks her third in the OVC along with a tie for eighth-best time in program history.
Ponds also had a solid showing in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.93 seconds. The mark is the second-best in the OVC this season.
Chris Navarro claimed fifth place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.40 seconds.
In one of the closing events of the evening, Mike Peters accented a strong day for the Redhawks in the 400-meter hurdles. Peters finished the event in 53.55 seconds, besting his previous top-OVC mark and inching closer to the top-10 list at Southeast.
"Mike ran really well," Crumpecker said. "He is going to continue running faster in the coming meets."
Kevin Farley placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 17.49 meters. The throw was one inch farther than his previous OVC leading toss. Shone was just behind in 11th place with a throw of 16.35 meters.
After running the seventh-best time in the OVC last week at the Joey Haines Invite in the 5,000-meter run, Rebekah Lawson topped that mark in a sixth place finish. She crossed the line in 17:21.94, the fifth-best time this season in the conference.
In the 1,500-meter run, Marc Maton crossed the line in 3:58.05, a mark that ranks ninth in the OVC after today.
Cheyenne Tunti had a an 11th place finish in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 56.40 seconds. That time ties her season-best that she had set last week.
"Overall it was a great day," Crumpecker said. "Most of the stuff on the track tomorrow are relays. We will have some fun with those. We have the javelin throwing along with long jumping, it should be a big day in those events."
Saturday is the final day of the Sea Ray Relays with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and running events at 11 a.m.
