CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After a successful Joey Haines Invitational, the Southeast Missouri track and field team travels to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Tennessee Relays Powered by Sea Ray.
The meet features 45 squads and 14 professional clubs. Of the collegiate schools, the Redhawks will compete against several Ohio Valley Conference institutions including Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State and Morehead State.
"It is one of the bigger meets we go to," Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. "It gives everyone an opportunity to compete with teams from all over the east. We hope it brings out some good marks."
Crumpecker is also excited to be competing against fellow OVC schools.
"It gives us a chance to see what they look like first hand," Crumpecker said. "You can compare times from one meet to another but getting in the same weather conditions helps to see where you are at."
The Tennessee Relays Powered by Sea Ray kicks off Thursday with the 10,000-meter runs and the hammer throw while Friday and Saturday have full schedules beginning at 10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., respectively.
Southeast leads the OVC in 11 categories including both men's and women's shot put, discus and javelin. Kevin Farley and Courtney Gapelu own the top marks in the shot put while Jason Walker and Kayla Gutierrez have the top marks in the discus. Brian Grote and Bethany Pfeiffer each lead the league in the javelin throw.
Chris Navarro finds himself atop the leader board in both the 110-meter hurdles and the decathlon while Reggie Miller is tops in the OVC in the high jump and triple jump.
Mike Peters 400-meter hurdle time of 53.39 seconds at the Joey Haines Invite gives him the top spot in the OVC as well.
"We are just going out and trying to improve every meet," Crumpecker added. "Usually if you do that, good things happen at the end of the year."
The University of Tennessee will offer a live results page for fans to follow the action. A live video stream of all three days can be viewed for a fee through www.UTSports.com.
