PDF VersionCARBONDALE, Ill. - Southeast Missouri (4-4) picked up three points in singles play, but it wasn't enough in a close 4-3 loss to regional-rival Southern Illinois (6-3) Sunday afternoon.
Southeast, which dropped its second-straight match, got wins from
Valeriia Nagovitcina,
Heather Robinson and
Melissa Martin in singles action.
"Heather, Valeriia and Melissa showed an extraordinary effort to pull out their matches today," said Southeast head coach
Leah Hottois. "As a team, we have to learn to work together to edge out our opponents during close matches."
Nagovitcina improved to 5-3 in dual singles this season when she defeated Meagan Monaghan, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 2 position. Robinson's team-high sixth singles victory came in a tiebreaker against Ariadna Cairo Baza at No. 4. She dropped the first set, 3-6, before bouncing back to win the point by scores of 7-6, 1-0 (10-8). Martin then took down Lola Garcia in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles.
The Salukis captured the decisive point in doubles action with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Anita Lee and Korey Love beat Robinson and Martin, 8-2, while Polina Dozortseva and Cairo Baza got by Nagovitcina and
Annisa Warasanti, 8-2.
SIU, which beat both Southeast and other Ohio Valley Conference member UT Martin Sunday, is currently on a six-match winning streak.
The Redhawks return to action at Arkansas State on Mar. 8.
