Box ScoreMURRAY, Ky. – The Southeat Missouri women's basketball team was unable to stop a second-half run from Murray State, falling 66-55 Wednesday night at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The rare Wednesday game was the result of a postponement on Jan. 6, when electricity faltered, pushing the game to Wednesday.
Murray State scored 42 points in the second half, negating a 27-24 lead the Redhawks had at intermission, powered by 25 points from Taylor Porter.
The Redhawks fall to 8-18 overall and 4-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference while Murray State improves to 10-14, 3-9.
With the Racers holding a one-point lead at 9-8 with 15:36 left in the first half, the Redhawks went on an 8-1 run to take a 16-10 lead, almost solely on freshman
Brianna Mitchell's shoulders.
Yelena Rosado scored a layup followed by a 1-for-2 effort from the free throw line from Netanya Jackson for the Racers.
That is when Mitchell scored the next six points in the game to give the Redhawks the 16-10 advantage.
However, the Racers scored the next six points to knot the game up at 16-16 that created a back-and-forth first half that ended with Rosado scoring a layup with three seconds left to give the Redhawks a 27-24 lead.
With 13:26 remaining in the game, the Redhawks held that same three-point advantage with a 37-34 score when the Racers went on an 8-0 run to take a 42-37 lead in just two minutes.
Southeast was able to cut into the deficit, bringing the score to 46-45 with 7:19 remaining but Murray State again used a small run, this time 7-0, to reclaim a stronghold on the lead at 53-45 with 5:17 remaining.
The Redhawks again tried to make a strong push, utilizing aggressive play to get to the free throw line,
Allyson Bradshaw and
Jordan Hunter each sank a pair of shots from the charity strip bring the score to 57-51.
However, the Racers again answered, this time with a 3-point basket from the corner from Taylor Porter with 2:15 remaining.
With the Redhawks in foul mode to lengthen the game as much as possible, Murray State went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, leading to the final score of 66-55.
Hunter led Southeast with nine points as the Racers held the Redhawks to just 27.5 percent shooting.
Patricia Mack had 11 rebounds while
Connor King grabbed 10.
After Porter's 25 points, Jessica Winfrey had 18 points. Winfrey, the leagues leading rebounder, also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Tonight's game started a stretch of three games in six days for the Redhawks. Southeast returns to the Show Me Center for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, hosting Jacksonville State in the "Pink Up" game.
