LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska scored an early goal and used three second-half tallies to send the Southeast Missouri soccer team to a 4-0 loss in the 2013 season opener on Friday night.
Mayme Conroy and Jaycie Johnson netted two goals apiece and the Cornhuskers (1-0) outshot the Redhawks (0-1), 30-3 for the night.
Conroy opened the scoring in the third minute when she corralled Johnson's deflected shot on the left side and put the rebound into the net to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead. Her tally was the only scoring in the first half as Ashton Aubuchon made six saves to keep it a one-goal contest despite the Cornhuskers' 14-0 advantage in shots.
The shots kept coming from Nebraska in the second half. The Cornhuskers opened up breathing room by striking twice in a 3:39 span as Conroy headed in a corner kick from Samantha Areman in the 49th minute and Johnson finished a give-and-go from Caroline Flynn in the 53rd minute to push their lead to 3-0.
Southeast took its first two shots of the contest in the 75th minute as Jenna Collingridge's attempt was stopped by Kelly Schatz. That save led to a Redhawks' corner kick, which led to another shot from Ashley Geist that was blocked by the Cornhuskers' defense.
Johnson capped the scoring by converting on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
Aubuchon turned aside 10 Cornhusker shots in 90 minutes of play while Schatz made two stops while pairing with Emma Stevens for the combined shutout.
Southeast returns to action on Sunday when it takes on Missouri-Kansas City in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
