CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri soccer team is officially kicking off the start of the 2013-14 calendar when it opens regular season play this weekend at Nebraska (Friday; 6:00 p.m.) and UMKC (Sunday; 1:00 p.m.)
Quick Kicks
•Southeast is opening the season on the road for the second time in three seasons, but only the third time in its 15-year school history.
•The Redhawks' 25-player roster is comprised of eight freshmen and 10 newcomers.
•Southeast is 0-1 all-time against Nebraska, dropping a 4-0 decision in Lincoln last season.
•Sunday is Southeast's third all-time meeting (1-1) against UMKC, but the first time the teams have squared off in Kansas City.
•Southeast is 1-6 all-time against Big Ten schools (0-2 vs. Illinois, 0-1 vs. Indiana, 1-1 vs. Iowa, 0-1 vs. Nebraska and 0-1 vs. Northwestern).
News & Notes
Redhawks' Outlook – Ohio Valley Conference coaches and sports information directors picked Southeast to finish third in the OVC Preseason Poll. Southeast returns six starters to a team that went 7-10-4 (5-3-2 OVC) last fall. Southeast's conference mark was good for fourth in the 2012 league standings and the Redhawks advanced to the OVC Tournament semifinals for the third-consecutive season.
About Nebraska – The Cornhuskers went 7-12-1 (4-7 Big Ten) last fall, starting out 5-5-1 (2-1 in conference play) before dropping seven of their last nine contests. UN returns a whopping 11 starters, including Mayme Conroy, who led the team with 14 goals and 28 points in her sophomore campaign. The Redhawks and Cornhuskers met in 2012, with Nebraska scoring four second-half goals and outshooting Southeast 30-1 to win 4-0.
About UMKC – The Kangaroos went 6-9-4 (3-4-1 Summit) in 2012. Taylor Bare is back with UMKC after netting a team-best six goals and 13 points last fall. UMKC and Southeast met in Houck Stadium last season and the Kangaroos grinded out a 1-0 victory to even the all-time series at 1-1.
Exhibition Recap – Southeast went 1-1-1 in three exhibition contests last week. The Redhawks opened up with a 0-0 tie against in-state rival Saint Louis on Aug. 13, outshooting the Billikens 6-5 in the process. The Redhawks allowed two goals in under 19 minutes in their next contest against Lipscomb on Aug. 16. Southeast pulled within a goal on Erin Shulman's goal in the 73rd minute before falling 2-1. The Redhawks put on a clinic the next night, outshooting Missouri S&T 18-5 en route to a 7-0 win. Storm French and Natasha Minor scored two goals apiece while Shulman and Amy Ward both chipped in four points on a goal and two assists.
Needed on the Field – Sophomore forward Erin Shulman enters the fall healthy after a knee injury made her miss the final 15 contests a year ago. Shulman is an important player to Southeast's offense as she has 10 goals and 21 points in 21 career matches, though she has missed 20 matches due to injury in her career. As a true freshman in 2011, Shulman netted nine goals en route to first-team All-OVC and OVC Freshman of the Year honors while helping Southeast win a regular-season OVC title.
Veteran Newcomer – A new face will join Shulman up top in junior Breana Beine, who sat out 2012 after transferring from Evansville. Beine scored 10 goals in two seasons with the Purple Aces, including seven in her debut 2010 season, which earned her Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year.
