CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped their series finale with Eastern Illinois 13-3 Sunday afternoon in Charleston, Ill. The Redhawks offense was held to seven hits after recoding a season-high 22 on Saturday.
The Redhawks drop to 20-21 overall and 12-9 in the Ohio Valley Conference as the Panthers improve to 13-22 and 4-12 in the conference.
Derek Gibson led the Redhawks going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Jason Blum extended his hitting streak to 14-games with a single.
Eastern Illinois starter Matt Borens (2-4) got the win throwing a complete game with six strikeouts as he allowed seven hits.
The Panthers got on the board first with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Panthers recorded seven hits in the inning and put seven consecutive hitters on base.
Eastern Illinois hit two RBI doubles to highlight the frame as Treysen Vavra and Tyler Schweigert helped give the Panthers the early lead.
The Redhawks offense struggled to get the offense going in the contest, but got a run on the board in the top of the sixth inning as
Josh Meade drove in
Dalton Hewitt on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1 Eastern Illinois.
EIU added a run in the sixth inning on an RBI single off the bat of Caleb Howell to extend their lead back to right at 9-1 after six innings.
Eastern Illinois added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on their way to the 13-1 lead. Brandt Vallach added a two-run double to left centerfield to highlight the frame.
The Redhawks added two runs in the top of the ninth as Meade scored on an error and
Nolan Fisher added a pinch-hit RBI single, but it was too little as the Redhawks fell 13-3.
Trevor Kill (0-2) was tagged with the loss going 1.1 innings allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits.
Eastern Illinois was led offensively by Valach as he finished the day going 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Redhawks return to action Tuesday as they head to Carbondale, Ill. to take on Southern Illinois.
