KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri track and field program concluded a productive weekend at the Sea Ray Relays on Saturday.
The Redhawks saw seven individuals finish in the top 10 of their events in the final day of the three-day competition, one of the largest meets they have been a part of this outdoor season.
Jerika Lewis wrapped up a stellar weekend by placing second in the 200m showcase, crossing the line in 24.11. Lewis also placed eighth in the 400m and ran the anchor leg of the Redhawks' 4x400m relay (15th; 3:52.20)
“Jerika ran two very fast 200s this weekend,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “I'm very proud of her performance, she had a great all-around meet between the 200, 400 and 4x400.“
The Redhawks also shined bright in some of the men's relays on Saturday. Southeast's 4x100m team of Blake Smith, Kendrick Farr, Alexander Anderson and Blake Carter took third in the meet with a season-best time of 40.97, which tops all prior OVC relay teams. That group shaved more than a full second off their previous season best. The Redhawks also put together a 4x800m relay team in the form of Kameron Long, Alex Zisser, Charles Johnson and Tyler Holmes. That group placed fifth with a time of 7:38.18, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
“Our 4x100 team really dropped their time,” Crumpecker said. “They are getting close to the time that it will take to qualify for regionals. I think they can fix a few things and shave some seconds off their time still, which is encouraging.
In the field events, Brian Grote erupted for a career-best throw of 199-7, taking this in the javelin. That mark puts him seventh in the Southeast record books and placed him fourth in the meet. Fellow javelin thrower Joel Krause also finished in the top-10, placing eighth with a career-best toss of 174-4.
“Brian did a fantastic job in the javelin,” Crumpecker said. “He shattered his previous career best and cracked our school's top 10 list with this performance. He really stepped up today.”
In other throwing events, Courtney Gapelu finished two inches shy of her season best in the shot put. The junior threw 50-2 3/4 and took fifth in the competition. Kevin Farley also notched a top-10 finish in the men's competition, taking ninth with a throw of 55-10 1/4.
In addition to his strong work in the relay, Carter notched a fifth-place finish in the men's long jump. The sophomore cleared 24-2 1/4, his third-best leap of the outdoor season.
The Redhawks are slated to send competitors to both the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational and the Black and Gold Invitational next weekend.
