MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Southeast Missouri throwers opened the outdoor season as impressively as they finished their indoor season at the Rhodes Open on Saturday.
Southeast throwers combined for four first-place finishes and achieved personal bests throughout the lineup.
“Today was a good day,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “We had several PRs right out the gate. Anytime you open the season with a career-best, you figure that athlete is going to have a pretty good year.”
Both the men's and women's teams recorded two first-place finishes in the throwing events. On the men's side, senior Craig Robinson led all competitors in the shot put, tossing 55-9 3/4 on his fourth and final throw of the day. Robinson also finished second in the hammer throw (career-best 188-10) and third in the discus (148-5)
Joel Krause posted the other first-place performance for the Southeast men, winning the javelin with a career-best mark of 170-8 on his last throw of the day. The Redhawks dominated in that event, posting three of the top five marks as Brian Grote (158-1) and Jason Walker (152-9) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Southeast wasn't limited to just those strong efforts. Kevin Farley finished just behind Robinson in the shot put, earning second after launching a throw 51-10. That was one of three top-three finishes from the returning Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Freshman of the Year. He notched another second-place finish in the discus (156-5) and took third in the hammer throw (career-best 185-0). Jared Siemers (fourth; 178-9) and Walker (fifth; 157-2) gave the Redhawks a total of four top-five finishers in the hammer throw.
“Craig and Kevin both had great days in the hammer throw and Jared was right at his career best,” Crumpecker said. “Joel also put up a good performance in the javelin.”
Another notable performer at the Rhodes Open was the 2013 track and field debut of senior Nate Shipley. The second-team All-OVC performer in cross country exhausted his indoor eligibility, but took eighth in his first 5000m of the season after crossing the line in 15:49.53.
“It wasn't a great day to run distance races,” Crumpecker said. “Nate ran conservatively since this was his first race since cross country season. He'll get better as the season goes on.”
In the women's competition, Courtney Gapelu's first throw of 49-9 3/4 was good enough to claim the shot put. The Redhawks took the first three spots in the event with Kayla Guttierez launching a throw of 45-9 1/4 and Sarah Hall recording a distance of 45-7 3/4.
Hall notched an event win in the hammer throw thanks to her second throw of 165-10. She also placed second in the javelin (111-10) and third in the discus (134-5).
The Redhawks also got a top-three finish from Emilea Old. The junior notched a second-place throw of 150-11, a new career-best, in the hammer throw.
Southeast returns to action on March 23 when it heads to the SIUE Invitational.
