CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – A quick goal early and an insurance tally late kept the Southeast Missouri soccer team on the winning track in Friday night's 2-0 win over Lindenwood at Houck Stadium.
The Redhawks (3-4-2) are an unbeaten 3-0-1 in their last four matches and snapped the Lions' (7-3) five-match winning streak.
Southeast got on the board early as
Breana Beine caused a turnover by LU's defense and broke down the back line down the right side for a shot. Lindenwood keeper Bailey Tracy made a quality stop, but
Storm French pounced on the rebound and fired it into the wide open net to make it 1-0.
"Bre did a great job attacking with confidence all night," Southeast head coach
Heather Nelson said. "She was constantly putting pressure on the defense and that first goal was because of her attacking mentality and quick feet."
The Redhawks had a couple opportunities to extend the lead, but drew iron on a pair of attempts.
Jennifer Antonacci shot the ball from a sharp angle that hit the goal post in the 28th minute and French made a bid for her second of the day when she ripped a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that eluded Tracy but caromed off the crossbar and stayed out with under 14 minutes left in the opening period. Southeast took the 1-0 lead into the locker room and outshot LU 6-3 while holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Southeast's lead was extended in the 85th minute when
Torey Byrd scored her first goal of the season. The junior headed in a flip throw from senior forward
Amy Ward to give the Redhawks the insurance goal they needed.
"We fought the field a bit tonight," Nelson said. "The field was wet and the ball picked up speed when it bounced. We grinded out this win tonight even though I didn't think we played all that well, but I feel we will be sharper on Sunday."
The Redhawks enjoyed a 13-5 advantage in shots and took six corner kicks while yielding just two to the Lions. Beine led all players with three shot attempts.
Ashton Aubuchon earned her second win of the season by making a save in 49:42 in goal.
Lauren Meyer started the second half, but was forced out due to injury after clocking 40:18 in the net and making a save.
Southeast resumes Ohio Valley Conference play on Sunday when it hosts Jacksonville State. Opening kickoff at Houck Stadium is at 1 p.m.
