About Eastern Illinois – The Panthers dropped a 68-58 decision at Murray State on Monday night, which snapped their three-game winning streak. EIU is tied for first place in the OVC West Division with a 5-2 league record (11-8 overall). Eastern Illinois has a rotation that goes eight players deep, with all logging at least 14 minutes per game. Ta'Kenya Nixon is EIU's go-to player as she averages 13.8 points (sixth in the OVC) and 5.4 assists per game (second). Mariah King is also averaging double figures, pouring in 13.2 points per game. In conference play, EIU averages 72.4 points (second) and allows 61.6 points (third) per game. The Panthers are the league's second-best rebounding team (+3.9 per game) and are the conference's third-most efficient three-point shooting squad (34.1 percent).
Last Meeting – Southeast jumped ahead, 21-17 with just over eight minutes left in the first half, but a 17-3 EIU run to close out the frame put the Panthers up 34-24 at halftime. The Redhawks drew as close as five points a minute and a half into the second half, but the Panthers used an 11-0 run to put the game away as Southeast did got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Courtney Shiffer tallied 13 points while
Brittany Harriel and
Bailie Roberts each tallied 11. Ta'Kenya Nixon led all players with 24 points.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Snap a three-game losing streak.
•Snap a six-game road losing streak.
•Defeat Eastern Illinois for the first time since Jan. 10, 2009, ending a seven-game skid in the series.
•Surpass last season's road win total.
Three Down – Southeast followed a season-best three-game winning streak with its second three-game losing skid of the year. During their three wins, Southeast allowed only 55.4 points per game on 32.4 percent shooting while averaging 66.7 points per game. The Redhawks' offense has still been strong enough at 64.3 points per game, but their defense has struggled. Southeast is yielding 73.3 points and opponents are shooting 43.8 percent from the floor.
Injury News – Senior post
Courtney Shiffer has missed the Redhawks' last three games due to a concussion sustained in practice. The senior, who started 14 of Southeast's first 16 games, averages 4.2 points and 4.8 rebounds and ranks sixth in the OVC with 0.9 blocks per game. Beyond that, the Redhawks relied on Shiffer for her defensive presence in the post as the Redhawks allowed 60.8 points per game and held eight opponents under 60 points when she played. Southeast is allowing 73.3 points per contest without her. These are the first games Shiffer has missed since coming to Southeast and she is presently day-to-day.
The Road Ahead – Southeast's three-game losing streak dropped the team to 10th in the overall OVC standings at 2-4, placing the Redhawks on the outside looking in on the OVC tournament field, which takes the top eight teams in the league to Nashville. Southeast will have to climb the standings against some of the better teams in the conference as five of its remaining 10 games come against teams that have a winning conference record. The Redhawks also need to find a way to win on the road, where they are 1-8 this season, as they play six of their last 10 games away from the Show Me Center.
Home is Where the Heart is – Southeast has been a completely different team at home versus on the road this season. The Redhawks are averaging 65.7 points per game in their nine home dates, going 6-3 in those games. Conversely, Southeast is scoring only 54.3 points in its 10 games away from the Show Me Center, scoring less than 60 points in the last nine away dates. The first half has been the biggest difference within those games as Southeast has tallied 28 or more first-half points and led at halftime in all but one of its home games, but has only scored more than 27 first-half points on the road twice. The Redhawks have trailed at halftime in nine of their 10 road/neutral site contests and five of those deficits have been by 10 points or more.
Offense Perks Up – The Redhawks have picked it up at the offensive end since the beginning of conference play. Southeast averaged 56.9 points per game in their first 12 games of the season, scoring 55 points or less six times. Since OVC play started, the Redhawks have scored 58 or more points in seven-straight games. Southeast has cracked 70 or more points in three of their six league games and is averaging 65.3 points per game in OVC play.
