Dayton, Ohio – The Southeast Missouri baseball team dropped their series finale against Wright State 6-5 Sunday afternoon in Dayton, Ohio. The Redhawks trailed 5-1 after two innings as the Redhawks battled back to pull within one, but All-American closer Michael Schum got out of the jam for the Raiders as Southeast loaded the bases in the top of the ninth.

“We played a lot of good defense today, we had several chances today, we were just a hit away,” said head coach Mark Hogan.

The Raiders took the series 2-1 over the Redhawks taking the final two games of the set. Wright State improves to 6-7 overall, while Southeast drops to 6-10.

Wright State got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame plating three runs to jump out to 3-0 lead on the Redhawks. Shortstop Justin Kopale highlighted the inning with a two run single through the right side. The Raiders threatened to add to their lead, but starter Zack Smith got out of the early inning jam.

The Redhawks tallied their first run of the game in the top of the second inning to cut the Raider's lead to 3-1. Andy Lennington and Ryan Barnes opened the inning with a pair of singles. Senior Taylor Heon later drove in Lennington on a fielder's choice to plate the Redhawks' first run.

The Raiders added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double down the left field line off the bat of senor All-American Jake Hibberd to extend their lead to 5-1.

Southeast added their second run of the contest in the top of the third inning. Southeast loaded the bases with a pair of walks from Kody Campbell and Trenton Moses. Lennington then drove in Kenton Parmley on an infield hit to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The Redhawks added two runs in the top of the fourth as Southeast continued to cut into the Raider's lead. Dalton Hewitt and Cole Bieser opened the frame with a pair of singles, Bieser would reach second base after his base hit on a terrific piece of base running advancing on a missed cut off throw.

Hewitt later scored on a balk by pitcher Andrew Elliott and Bieser scored on a sacrfice fly off the bat of the Redhawks all-time leader in the category, Kenton Parmley to make it 5-4 Raiders.

The Raiders once again added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth with a run to take a two run lead at 6-4, but Southeast responded and once again cut the lead to one in the top of the sixth.

Parmley reached base on a two out single to leftfield. He came around to score on a failed pickoff attempt of Moses at first base as Southeast would again trail by one at 6-5.

Moses and Campbell led off the top of the ninth inning with a pair of singles. Lennington then followed with a screamer to the right side, but second baseman Sam Picchiotti made a diving play throwing out Lennington and holding Campbell at second and Moses at third.

After a intentional walk to Ryan Barnes, Schum got Taylor Heon to roll into a double play to end the game as Wright State took the game 6-5.

The Redhawks offense was paced by Parmley, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. He extended his hitting streak to 23 games and his reaching base safely streak to 32 games.

Cole Bieser had a great day at the plate for Southeast going 3-for-5 with a run scored. Barnes added two hits for Southeast with a pair of walks. Moses was 1-for-3 with two walks as he extended his reaching base safely streak to 37 games.

Zack Smith (1-3) took the loss for Southeast. Ryan Kendall pitched 4.2 innings of solid relief out of the Redhawks bullpen allowing only one run with three strikeouts. Dylan Lynn threw the final two innings allowing only one hit.

“Kendall and Lynn were brilliant for us today out of the bullpen, we were very pleased with their efforts,” said Hogan.

Jordan Marker earned the win throwing 2.1 innings allowing a run. Schum earned his third save of the year throwing two scoreless innings.

All-American Jake Hibberd led the Raider's offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI.

“We had several gains this weekend,” said Hogan.
