About Arkansas State – The Red Wolves are off to an 0-3 start after dropping their home opener to Witchita State, 60-51. ASU dropped road decisions at Toledo (56-34) and UT Martin (82-72) prior to Thursday's home opener. Jane Morrill (13.0 points per game, 7.3 rebounds per game) and Carlisha Wyatt (11.3 points per game, 8.0 rebounds per game) lead Arkansas State in scoring and rebounding, respectively. ASU has turned the ball over 63 times in its first three games and has yet to play a game closer than nine points in the early going this season.
Last Meeting – Karley Evans (17 points) and
Allyson Bradshaw (13 points) combined for 30 of the Redhawks' 56 points in a thrilling win over Arkansas State at the Show Me Center last season. Evans scored Southeast's first eight points and Bradshaw drilled a three-pointer with 1:58 left that gave the Redhawks the lead for good. That victory was the first of head coach
Ty Margenthaler's career.
A Southeast victory would…
•Be the Redhawks' second-straight victory over the Red Wolves.
•Improve Southeast to 2-1 against Arkansas State since becoming a Division I school.
•Give Southeast its first win at Arkansas State since Feb. 3, 1986 (83-73).
•Snap a 23-game road losing streak in non-conference games.
•Match Southeast's road win total from the 2011-12 season.
Early Tests – The Redhawks challenged themselves extensively in the early going of the 2012-13 campaign. Last wednesday's tilt at Kansas, which reached the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament, was Southeast's third-straight game against a team that competed in the postseason a year ago. Southeast forged a 44-44 tie at Kansas with over 14 minutes remaining and had the game as close as five points with under three minutes left before falling 68-58. Wright State, who Southeast defeated 78-66 on Nov. 9, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Women's Basketball Invitational. Southeast traveled to 2012 Women's National Invitational Tournament qualifier UMKC on Nov. 12 and held a 59-58 lead with under two minutes left before falling 69-64.
Bradshaw's Improvement – After serving as a key weapon off the bench last year, sophomore guard
Allyson Bradshaw has thrived as a starter three games into the season. The sophomore has scored in double figures in each game after doing so five times in a bench role last season. The Cape Girardeau, Mo., native is averaging a team-best 16.0 points per game, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point range. She has caught fire the past two games, pouring in a career-high 18 points at UMKC and 17 more at Kansas. During that two-game stretch, Bradshaw has hit 13-of-20 (65 percent) shots from the field and gone 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from three-point range.
Balanced Attack – Southeast has received balanced scoring early on, seeing at least eight players score points in each of its first two games.
Allyson Bradshaw (16.0 points per game) and
Brittany Harriel (12.0) are each averaging double-digit points and the Redhawks have had nine individual efforts of 10+ points thus far. At this point last season, Southeast was averaging only 42.7 points per game and had only three individual efforts of 10 or more points.
Need to Close Better – While the Redhawks have already shown marked improvement in nearly every facet, one thing they are trying to improve on is how they finish games. Southeast has entered the final media timeout (under four minute deadball) either ahead or tied in two of its first three games, but has been outscored in that final stretch each time. A 67-50 lead with 3:54 remaining against Wright State got whittled down to 67-58 with 1:31 left before the Redhawks' foul shooting sealed an opening-night victory. Against UMKC, the Redhawks led 58-56 with under four minutes remaining and were tied 58-58 at the final media timeout. After Southeast took a brief 59-58 lead with under two minutes remaining, UMKC went on a 7-0 run and downed Southeast by a 69-64 score. Southeast trailed Kansas by a 56-50 count at the final media and after cutting the deficit to 58-53, fell 68-58 in the end.
Looking for a Comeback – Southeast has done an impressive job of battling back from halftime deficits to tie or take the lead in its last two games at UMKC and Kansas. However, those setbacks lengthened an extended streak for Southeast. After trailing at halftime in its last two games and eventually falling in both, the Redhawks dropped to 1-38 when trailing at halftime since the start of the 2009-10 season. Southeast has dropped 33-consecutive games when it has trailed at halftime since rallying past Western Michigan, 60-56, on Dec. 7, 2010.
