Redhawks Get First Win
Southeast picked up its first win of the season with a commading 89-61 victory over NAIA affiliate Lyon College (Nov. 12). The Redhawks used a 17-0 run in a span of 6:07 during the first half to blow the game open. Southeast also let its lead dip below 20 points only once in the second stanza.
Home-Opener
The Redhawks won their home-opener for the second-straight season when they beat Lyon College, 89-61, on Nov. 12. Southeast improved to 16-5 all-time in home-openers since joining the NCAA Division I ranks. The Redhawks evened their record to 2-2 in home-openers under head coach
Dickey Nutt. The last time Southeast opened with a win at home in back-to-back years was 2005-06 (vs. Truman State) and 2006-07 (vs. UC Riverside).
Big Margin
The recent 89-61 victory over Lyon College (Nov. 12) marked Southeast's seventh by 20 or more points under head coach
Dickey Nutt. The last time the Redhawks beat an opponent by more than 20 points was Feb. 9, 2012 (86-56, vs. UT Martin).
Cruise Control
Southeast won a home-opener by 28 or more points for the second-straight season when it beat Lyon College, 89-61, on Nov. 12. Prior to that, the Redhawks defeated Harris-Stowe, 95-60, on Nov. 14, 2011.
Busy Week Ahead
The Redhawks will hit the road for four-straight games, beginning Sunday. Southeast first faces Chattanooga (Nov. 18), Louisiana Tech (Nov. 19) and Troy (Nov. 20) in its final three games of the CBE Classic. The Redhawks then head to Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 24) two days after the Thanksgiving holiday. Southeast plays five of its last six November games away from home.
Series History
Southeast and McNeese State meet for the second time Thursday. The Cowboys visit the Show Me Center for the first time on a return trip from last year's ESPN BracketBuster. McNeese State defeated the Redhawks, 74-61, in Lake Charles, La. on Feb. 18, 2012.
Against Southland Conference Opponents
The Redhawks have faced five schools from the Southland Conference during their basketball history. Southeast is 10-6 all-time against Southland foes, holding a 5-4 record vs. Central Arkansas, a 0-1 record vs. Nicholls State, a 3-0 mark vs. Southeastern Louisiana, a 2-0 record against Texas-Arlington and an 0-1 record vs. McNeese State. The Redhawks will also host Central Arkansas on Dec. 8 this season.
Southeast Ties
David Dumars, who coached the defensive backs at Southeast Missouri from 1989-99, is an assistant men's basketball coach at McNeese State. Dumars is in his 12th season as an assistant and has helped guide the Cowboys to two league titles and participate in both the NCAA and NIT postseason tournaments. He played basketball in high school and is the older brother of former McNeese State All-American and All-Pro Joe Dumars who is now President of the Detroit Pistons and a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame. David works with the Cowboy post players and is one of the Southland Conference's premier recruiters.
Starters See Doubles
Four Southeast starters scored double figures in the Redhawks 89-61 win over Lyon College (Nov. 12).
Tyler Stone turned in a game-high 25 points, while
Marland Smith followed with 19,
Nino Johnson added 14 and
A.J. Jones chipped in 13. It marked the first time Southeast had four starters in double-digits since Jan. 26, 2012 (vs. Austin Peay). The Redhawk starters accounted for 73 of the team's 89 points against the Scots.
Smith Sets to Break School Record in Three-Point Attempts
Marland Smith needs to shoot just two more three-pointers to break Southeast's all-time career record in three-point field goals attempted. Smith currently ranks second with 563 three-point attempts. Derek Winans presently holds the record with 564 from 2001-05. Smith attempted a three-pointer in 94-consecutive games. The only time he did not shoot a three was during the first game of his career at Saint Louis on Nov. 14, 2009.
Dunk Fest
Southeast had a total of nine dunks against Lyon College (Nov. 12).
Tyler Stone collected five,
Nino Johnson finished with three and
A.J. Jones contributed one. The Redhawks got their home crowd going early when it had seven dunks in the first half alone.
Double-Double
Nino Johnson and
A.J. Jones each posted their first career double-double against Lyon College (Nov. 12). Johnson scored 14 points and had 15 rebounds, while Jones pitched in 13 points and grabbed 10 boards.
Johnson Off to Strong Start
Nino Johnson scored double figures in his first two starts this season. Johnson is averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds as the Redhawks second-leading scorer and top rebounder in 2012-13. He currently leads the team with four blocks and a .625 (10-of-16) field goal percentage. Johnson also opened the 2011-12 season with double-digit points in his first two games.
Stone Takes Control
Tyler Stone scored 20 or more points for the sixth time in his career when he had a game-high 25 against Lyon College (Nov. 12). Stone made 10-of-13 field goals and a perfect 5-of-5 free throws, while pulling down six rebounds, dishing out one assist and gathering two blocks in 29 minutes. He has scored double figures 28 times in 33 games at Southeast. In addition, Stone became the second 20-point scorer in the Ohio Valley Conference this season.
Three-Point Defense
Southeast presently ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference in three-point field goal percentage defense. The Redhawks are limiting opponents to just 18 percent from behind the arc through two games. Southeast's foes have made just 9-of-50 three-pointers this year.
Scouting McNeese State
McNeese State makes its first-ever trip to Cape Girardeau Thursday. The Cowboys enter their matchup with the Redhawks at 1-1 this year. McNeese State suffered its first loss at LSU (73-48) on Nov. 13. The Cowboys currently lead the Southland Conference in blocked shots (16) and rank third in steals (23) after two games. McNeese State is also giving up just 63.5 points per game which is good for fourth in the Southland in scoring defense. Kevin Hardy has a league-high six blocks and ranks second on the team in scoring with 14 points per contest. Meanwhile, Dontae Cannon is the Cowboys top scorer with 14.5 points per game.
