JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State (2-4) shot 55.1 percent from the field and had all five of its starters score double figures in a 79-63 win over Southeast Missouri (3-4) Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.
ASU drained six three-pointers, including four by Ed Townsel, who turned in a game-high 20 points.
The Red Wolves earned their second win against an Ohio Valley Conference opponent this season in
Dickey Nutt's first trip back to ASU, where he spent 13 seasons as a head coach.
"Tonight was disappointing," said Nutt. "Our defense was poor and I thought it was one of our worst performances."
Southeast, which saw a two-game winning streak come to an end, struggled to find an answer for ASU's red-hot shooting.
The Redhawks took a 7-2 lead early when
Leon Powell made a couple layups and
Lucas Nutt knocked down a three-pointer just 1:21 into the game.
Townsel later buried two threes and scored eight points in a little over five minutes to help ASU pull ahead, 31-19, at the 6:26 mark, before the Red Wolves took a 44-29 lead at the break.
After Nutt's layup cut ASU's lead to nine (46-37) nearly four minutes into the second half, the Red Wolves responded with a 20-9 run to blow the game open. Townsel drained another three-pointer to cap the surge which gave ASU a 66-46 advantage with 9:57 left.
The Red Wolves would then lead by as many as 21 points before polishing off their second win of the season.
Townsel made 7-of-15 field goals and drained 4-of-6 three-pointers to lead all ASU scorers. Marcus Hooten (16), Malcoln Kirkland (14), Brandon Peterson (13) and Trey Finn (10) rounded out the five Red Wolve starters in double-digits. Peterson also narrowly missed a double-double, adding a game-high nine rebounds.
Nutt led Southeast with 13 points, including nine from behind the arc. His three 3-pointers marked a season-high.
"My adrenaline was at an all-time high," said Nutt, who played in front of several family members and friends. "It was emotional and I felt a little nervous at the beginning of the game."
Niemczyk and Powell followed with 12 points apiece, while
Tyler Stone chipped in 10 off the bench. Niemczyk turned in his third-straight double-digit scoring effort.
Michael Porter pulled down a team-high six rebounds, as well.
ASU outrebounded Southeast, 35-26, and hit 19-of-26 free throws on the night.
Southeast returns home to face Southeastern Louisiana Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
