EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon (2-1) closed out the first half with a 14-0 run and never looked back in a 86-61 win over Southeast Missouri (1-3) Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.
After true freshman
Nino Johnson threw down a dunk to pull Southeast to within three points (24-21) with 5:36 left in the first half, Oregon responded with 14 unanswered points to take a commanding 38-21 lead at the break.
The Ducks picked up where they left off early in the second half, outscoring the Redhawks 16-1 in the first 5:41. E.J. Singler's jumper extended Oregon's lead to 56-22 with 14:19 remaining.
Oregon would later lead by as many as 35 points before polishing off its second win of the season.
Southeast's top two scorers in
Leon Powell and
Marcus Brister each went scoreless, as the Redhawks shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the field.
Powell, who went scoreless for the first time in his Southeast career, had three rebounds and committed five fouls in 11 minutes. Brister also played 11 minutes.
Tyler Stone led the Redhawks with 20 points on 8-of-14 field goals and 3-of-6 free throws. Stone had one three-pointer, an assist, two blocks and one steal in a game-high 34 minutes.
Marland Smith followed with 12 points and three assists. Smith scored half of his points from three-point range.
Singler led all Oregon scorers with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Garrett Sim added 14 and Jeremy Jacob chipped in 10.
Southeast turned the ball over 19 times. Oregon scored 29 points off those miscues. The Ducks outrebounded the Redhawks, 36-29, as well.
The Redhawks will return to Cape Girardeau Monday following a long trip full of setbacks. Southeast's initial flight out of St. Louis Friday was delayed three hours. The Redhawks were then forced to stay overnight in San Francisco, Calif., after missing their connecting flight. Southeast did not get to Eugene until late Saturday afternoon.
Southeast will host Hannibal-LaGrange Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., CT, at the Show Me Center.
