Quick Hits
About Saint Louis – The Billikens dropped a tightly contested, 63-60, decision in their season opener at Memphis on Friday night. SLU was tied late, but a three-pointer with five seconds remaining dropped it to 0-1 to open the season. Eight players saw the court for at least 10 minutes. Courtney Webb led all players with 21 points in 23 minutes off the bench and Jacy Bradley also scored in double figures with 10 points. Lorreal Jones nearly recorded a double-double in the contest, grabbing 10 rebounds and chipping in eight points. Saint Louis finished the 2010-11 season with a 7-22 record, which included a 1-13 mark in the Atlantic 10.

Welcome to College – All 11 of Southeast's available players stepped onto the floor in Friday's season opener at NC State. The players included all three of the Redhawks' true freshmen. Yelena Rosado earned a start and scored four points, Allyson Bradshaw logged 11 minutes off the bench and walk-on Anna Steffel got on the floor in the final two minutes.

Encouraging Exhibition – Southeast got a look at most of its roster in Monday's exhibition contest against Harris-Stowe. Twelve of the Redhawks' 13 players got onto the court with 10 of them scoring points. Southeast's top three front court options led the way with Brittany Harriel (19 points), Bailie Roberts (17 points) and Courtney Shiffer (17 points) combining for 53 of Southeast's 93 points. Southeast went on runs of 20-0 and 19-0 to turn an early 13-9 deficit into a 47-point victory.

Familiar Faces – The Redhawks' roster features a lot of returning talent from a year ago, with all five starters and the top four scorers all on the 2011-12 roster. Juniors Brittany Harriel and Katie Norman tied for the team lead in scoring (8.9 points per game) and Harriel also paced the team in rebounding (6.7 per contest) and field goal percentage (.420). Another junior, Bailie Roberts finished third on the Redhawks with 7.6 points per game while only playing 21.8 minutes per contest.

Block Party – Junior Courtney Shiffer provided Southeast with a defensive presence in the post during her first season at Southeast. The Highland Community College transfer ranked third in the Ohio Valley Conference with 36 blocks. With one block in the season opener at NC State, Shiffer now needs 10 blocks to enter the school's career top-10 list.

Welcome Back – One of the main trouble spots for the Redhawks last year was a lack of depth in the post. That situation appears to be rectified going into this season thanks to the healthy returns of Patricia Mack. Mack got injured in the second game of the 2010-11 season, cutting her sophomore season short after a promising freshman campaign in 2009-10 where she averaged 5.4 rebounds per contest and posted two double-doubles.

A Belated Welcome – Another player returning to the fold is redshirt freshman forward Brooke Taylor. She is in the mix with all four years of eligibility intact after an illness forced her to miss the entire 2010-11 season. Taylor was a highly decorated prep performer, being named all-state during all four years at Bismarck High School.

Youth Movement – The majority of the 2011-12 Southeast Missouri women's basketball team will get the opportunity to develop for more than one season under first-year head coach Ty Margenthaler. Ten of the Redhawks' 13 players are freshmen, sophomores or juniors and many of them figure to log a lot of minutes this season. Southeast's top three scorers and top three rebounders a year ago are all juniors this season.

Coaching Pedigree – Ty Margenthaler was announced as Southeast's seventh head coach in program history in April and comes from a family rich in coaching. Margenthaler himself spent the past five seasons as the recruiting coordinator at Wisconsin, Prior to that, he spent six years as an assistant coach at Bradley. His father, Jack, was a head coach for 15 seasons at Western Illinois before retiring following an 11-year stint at SIU Edwardsville. His brother Matt has been the head coach at Minnesota State-Mankato for the past nine seasons and spent six years on the coaching staff at South Dakota State prior to that.
