CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With two matches remaining in the season, the Southeast Missouri State women's soccer team (10-5-1, 6-1 Ohio Valley) looks to add another conference title to its storied history. The Redhawks need only one point to clinch its first regular season championship since 2007 and host OVC foes Jacksonville State (2-11-4, 1-2-4 OVC) and Tennessee Tech (5-11-1, 2-5-0 OVC) on Friday (6:30 p.m. CT) and Sunday (1:00 p.m. CT). Southeast will honor seniors
Lauren Bozesky,
Jessie Crabtree,
Nikki Edwards,
Shona Goodwin,
Vanessa Hart and
Taylor Thomas prior to Sunday's Senior Day contest against TTU.
Last Week – Southeast played a rare non-conference match against a fellow Ohio Valley Conference team when it hosted UT Martin at Houck Stadium last Friday night. A week after posting a critical 2-1 victory at UT Martin, the Skyhawks returned the favor by downing the Redhawks in double overtime, 2-1.
Lauren Bozesky scored her seventh goal of the year with less than four minutes remaining to send the contest to overtime, but UT Martin netted the winner with 3:16 left to send Southeast to its second consecutive loss. The setback marks the first time all season that the Redhawks have lost consecutive matches. With two matches remaining in the regular season, Southeast needs only one point to clinch its fourth regular season OVC title and its first since 2007.
Scouting Jacksonville State – The Gamecocks are fighting for one of the last spots in next week's OVC Tournament. JSU is tied with Morehead State for eighth in the conference standings with seven points, three points shy of UT Martin and Austin Peay for the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament. The Gamecocks have netted only nine goals this season, the fewest in the Ohio Valley Conference. Jacksonville State has also netted only four goals in seven league matches. JSU has been solid defensively in OVC play, ranking third in the league with a 0.74 goals against average. Chelsea Pelletier and Nathalee Lariviere are tied for the team lead with five points apiece and goalkeeper Katelyn Geddings leads the OVC with 6.53 saves per game while checking in at second in the league with an .841 save percentage.
Scouting Tennessee Tech – The Golden Eagles sit last in the OVC with six points, but are still mathematically alive to qualify for the conference tournament. TTU has won two of its past three matches after opening league play 0-4. The Golden Eagles are seventh in the league in scoring and ninth in goals against average. Individually, Ellie Iaciofano and Kris Cambron lead the TTU attack with seven points apiece and Kerri Reid is tied for the team lead with three goals. Becca Toller has played every minute in goal and has a 1.53 goals against average.
Free Kicks:
All-Time Series – Southeast is 5-3-2 all-time against Jacksonville State and 8-5-1 against Tennessee Tech.
Last Meeting – Both the Gamecocks and Golden Eagles got the better of the Redhawks last season. JSU tripped up Southeast in last year's OVC opener with a 2-1 win in Jacksonville, Ala. TTU also posted a one-goal victory over Southeast at home, blanking the Redhawks 1-0 on Oct. 21 last year.
Coming Through – Senior
Lauren Bozesky has been a key cog in the Redhawks' attack the past couple weeks. After a slow start to the year, Bozesky has netted six goals and an assist for 13 points since the start of conference play, the best production in the OVC. Three of her five goals in league play have been game winners, which also leads all conference players.
Bringing the D – Southeast's bread and butter has been its stellar defensive play. The Redhawks boast a conference-best 0.85 goals against average and eight shutouts. The Redhawks' starting defense of
Nikki Edwards (1,462 minutes),
Hayley Abbott (1,332 minutes),
Meg Herndon (1,251 minutes) and
Shona Goodwin (1,107 minutes) have combined to play 5,152 out of a possible 5908 minutes on the back line (87.2 percent of the minutes).
Magic Number is 2 – The key to Southeast's success has been the number two. The Redhawks' are a perfect 7-0 when they find the back of the net at least twice offensively. The number also applies to the back end as Southeast is an unbeaten 9-0-1 when allowing fewer than two goals. Conversely, Southeast is 3-5-1 when scoring less than two goals and 1-5 when opponents tally two goals or more.
Winning the Close Ones – The Redhawks have proven adept at making the critical play to win a tightly contest match this season. Seven of the Redhawks' 15 contests have been decided by one goal and Southeast boasts a 5-2 record in those contests. In fact, four of Southeast's last six contests have been one-goal matches, with the Redhawks posting a 3-1 record in those contests.
Last Line of Defense – Sophomore goalkeeper
Ashton Aubuchon is in range to make her mark on the Southeast single season record books this year. At 10 wins, Aubuchon is in a fifth-place tie on the school's single season list. Her six solo shutouts already tied her total as a freshman and rank fifth in school history.
New Blood – Some of the newest members of the Redhawks are making the biggest impact on the scoresheet. Freshman
Erin Shulman (nine goals, 18 points) and senior transfer
Jessie Crabtree (five goals, 12 points) pace the Southeast attack with a combined 14 goals and 30 points this season. Their offensive prowess has carried the Redhawks thus far as they are 7-0 when Shulman scores at least one goal and 4-0 when Crabtree records at least one point.
