Support Helps Patterson Get Back on the Field

By Jeff Honza
Associate Director of Athletics for Strategic Communications

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – In the short time Adrian Patterson has been at Southeast Missouri, he realized the importance of support.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Patterson came to Cape Girardeau after playing two seasons at Kansas-based Coffeyville Community College and immediately felt welcomed by Redhawk Nation.

"I quickly learned to appreciate the vibrant community spirit that surrounds SEMO. The town is filled with individuals who are passionate about this university and its sports teams. The people in this community make me feel valued and appreciated," said Patterson.

During his first NCAA Division I season in 2024, Patterson started the opening two games of the year and tallied four tackles and one interception in that stretch. The rest of his season was wiped out by a shoulder injury.

As soon as it was over, Patterson knew he wouldn't be alone on his way to recovery.

"My coaches, trainers, doctors and teammates were there every step of the way providing unbelievable support and encouragement. I also felt the community support and that helped me too," he said.

After a full recovery, Patterson is back on the field as a starter in SEMO's secondary.

"I eagerly awaited when I would be able to return," said Patterson. "Our secondary is a force to reckon with and it's full of hardworking players striving for greatness."

Although fans were only able to get a brief look at what Patterson brings to the Redhawks defense a year ago, he looks forward to what 2025 holds.

"The competition in the secondary is fierce and drives me to be better," he said. "It's an incredible feeling to be healthy and part of such a talented group."

Whether it's dealing with personal/physical challenges or seeking guidance, Patterson is grateful for his other home he calls SEMO.

"The brotherhood with my teammates extends beyond the football field," said Patterson. "From the moment I set foot on this campus, I felt like I was part of a family. I always carry with me the lessons I've learned from my injury and the support of my coaches, teammates and the entire community."

SEMO wraps up its preseason camp with an intrasquad scrimmage at Houck Field Friday. Start time is 6 p.m., CT.
