Redhawks Split Doubleheader with Eastern Illinois Friday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Delaney Kell pitched a complete game shutout and Brooklyn Saysoff had four hits and three RBI as Southeast Missouri (14-12, 7-4) split a doubleheader with Eastern Illinois (16-16, 8-3) Friday. SEMO won game one, 3-0, before dropping the second contest, 8-5.

SEMO rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning to get by EIU in game one.

A big one-out error by second baseman Alisha Frederick was costly in the end as the Redhawks capitalized with three unearned runs.

With Kinley Wilkins already on base, Sydney Melton reached on Frederick's mishap. Brooklyn Saysoff then doubled to right scoring both Melton and pinch-runner Abby Robbins. On the next play, Gracie Luna singled, and pinch-runner Selby Patberg scored to cap the 3-0 shutout. Both of those hits came with two outs.

Delaney Kell was outstanding in the circle picking up her second-straight complete game victory. Kell recorded five strikeouts and allowed just four hits in seven innings. It marked her team-high second shutout of the season and ninth complete game of her career.

Kell, now 5-2 this year, sat down the Panthers in order in the seventh to preserve her shutout.

SEMO was no-hit by McKenzie Oslanzi through 5.2 innings before Madison Winkler wrecked the bid with a single in the top of the sixth. Oslanzi retired 17 of the first 18 hitters she faced before the Redhawks got to her late.

Oslanzi struck out six and gave up three runs on three hits although none of those runs were earned.

EIU scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to overcome a three-run deficit in the nightcap.

Briana Gonzalez reached on an error and Mia Mazzola scored. Karsyn Davey followed with a run-scoring double and pinch-hitter Morgan Hance singled home two runs with the bases loaded. Another SEMO error allowed the Panthers to score two more runs and EIU pulled ahead, 7-4.

EIU added another run in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Kendall Grover.

The Redhawks took their only lead of game two in the top of the third inning.

Back-to-back two-out hits, including a RBI-single by Saysoff and two-RBI double down the left field line by Kinley Wilkins gave SEMO a 4-1 advantage.

SEMO scored the final run of the game on a pinch-hit single by Tori Bradley in the top of the seventh.

Willow Van Haren (2-2) worked 4.1 innings allowing seven runs on three hits. All of those runs were unearned. Van Haren walked three and struck out one, as well.

Karlie McKenzie picked up the win. McKenzie allowed five runs on nine hits and walked four in six innings.

The Redhawks outhit the Panthers, 10-6, in game two.

Saysoff went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI, while Sydney Dennis added two hits and two runs scored to lead the way.

SEMO and EIU finish their series at 1 p.m., CT Saturday.
