CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Two days after his first career start at quarterback, Southeast Missouri redshirt-freshman
Johnny Weber was named Ohio Valley Conference-Big South Association Co-Freshman of the Week.
A native of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Weber completed 24-of-39 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns leading SEMO to its first OVC-Big South win of the season, a 28-12 victory over Tennessee State (Oct. 11).
Weber completed passes to eight different receivers in his starting debut. He threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to
Donnie Cheers in the first quarter and a 10-yard touchdown pass to
Kalvin Gilbert in the fourth quarter.
He took over as SEMO's quarterback after starter
Jax Leatherwood and backup
Patrick Heitert both sustained knee injuries two weeks earlier at UT Martin (Sept. 27).
Weber shared the league's Freshman of the Week honor with Western Illinois quarterback Cason Carswell. UT Martin quarterback Jase Bauer (Offensive), Gardner-Webb linebacker Cahari Haynes (Defensive) and UT Martin kicker Cade Hechter (Specialist) rounded the week's honorees.
Weber is the third SEMO player to earn one of the OVC-Big South's weekly accolades this season joining
Jax Leatherwood (Offensive Player of the Week, Sept. 8) and
Justin Keller (Specialist of the Week, Sept. 8).
