LAS CRUCES. N.M. –
Dorian Anderson had a career-high 115 receiving yards and scored a touchdown and
DC Pippin kicked three field goals, but Southeast Missouri (1-1) came up short in the final minutes of a 23-16 loss to New Mexico State (1-0) Saturday.
SEMO led until the last two minutes before falling to the Conference USA and Football Bowl Subdivision Aggies.
Down, 16-15, NMSU stopped
Payton Brown on a fourth-and-1 at the SEMO 34-yard line and went on to score the game-winning touchdown when Seth McGowan hit paydirt on a 3-yard run with 1:57 to go. McGowan ran up the middle for 17 yards on the previous play. Parker Awad followed with the 2-point conversion to put the Aggies ahead.
SEMO had one last chance and was at the NMSU 16-yard line when
Paxton DeLaurent's pass went off the hands of
Cam Pedro and was intercepted by Da'Marcus Crosby.
The Aggies scored 13 fourth-quarter points to pull off their come-from-behind win.
DeLaurent, who left SEMO's season-opener against North Alabama late in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, started under center.
He orchestrated a 7-play, 80-yard drive which led to the first touchdown of the contest during the Redhawks third possession. DeLaurent threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Anderson down the middle of the field giving SEMO a 7-0 advantage with 4:48 left in the first quarter.
NMSU answered on its next drive when McGowan ran 14 yards for a touchdown on a third-and-2. McGowan's first touchdown tied things up at 7-7 at the 11:04 mark in the second quarter.
SEMO went back to work at its own 25-yard line and DeLaurent completed five passes for 56 yards to get the Redhawks in field goal range. That drive resulted in a 37-yard field goal by Pippin regaining a 10-7 edge for SEMO with a little over seven minutes to go.
The Aggies covered 72 yards in 16 plays and used a 24-yard field goal by Abraham Montano to bring the game to a 10-10 deadlock at halftime.
After Dylan Early blocked
Logan Leftrick's punt,
Justus Johnson picked off Awad's pass in SEMO territory. Johnson posted his second interception of the season on the first turnover of the game.
Johnson's takeaway turned into a 53-yard field goal by Pippin which sailed through the uprights and put the Redhawks back on top, 13-10, with 9:22 in the third quarter. It was the third field goal of 50 or more yards in Pippin's career.
On fourth-and-2 at its own 23-yard line, SEMO faked a punt and nose tackle
Steven Lewis ran 27 yards to pick up a big first down for the Redhawks at midfield. That drive, however, ended with a missed 46-yard field goal by Pippin.
Pippin connected on his third field goal of the game, this time from 48 yards out extending the Redhawks lead to 16-10 early in the fourth period.
After a NMSU punt backed SEMO up to its own 1-yard line, the Redhawks committed two penalties on the same play with the second resulting in a safety.
The Aggies received the ensuing kickoff and used a 51-yard field goal by Montana made to make it a one-point game (16-15) with 6:07 left.
Anderson averaged 19.2 yards per catch on six receptions in the first 100-yard receiving game of his career.
DeLaurent completed 27-of-45 passes for 295 yards and one touchdown.
SEMO held a dominating 295-60 advantage in passing yards, while NMSU outgained the Redhawks, 210-57, on the ground.
Defensively,
Khalani Riddick paved the way with a game and career-high 11 tackles.
Bryce Norman followed close behind with nine stops, while
McCoy Casey added eight.
Additionally, the Redhawks had the ball over 15 minutes more than the Aggies.
SEMO returns home to host UT Martin in its Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Association opener on Sept. 7.
