Baseball Drops Game Two Saturday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Baseball (22-21, 10-7 OVC) fell in game two of the weekend series to Morehead State (24-19, 9-8 OVC) by a final score of 13-4 on Saturday afternoon.

Offensively, SEMO pounded out nine hits led by Ty Stauss and Bryce Cannon who each finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Stauss knocked his eighth home run and recorded a pair of RBIs as Cannon finished with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

MSU used 14 hits to score their 13 runs, led by four Eagles who finished with a multi-hit day. MSU's second baseman Nick Gooden finished 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Eagles.

After a leadoff triple by Josh Cameron in the second inning, SEMO's RBI leader Cannon roped a double into right center off MSU starting pitcher Carter Owens to record his 37th RBI of the season and give the Redhawks an early 1-0 lead.

A three-run fourth inning for MSU thanks in large part to a three-run home run by designated hitter Hunter Thomas off RHP Sam Heyman gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

SEMO would respond with a pair of runs in the fifth inning thanks to Stauss' blast as his two-run shot tied the game at three, midway through the contest.

The Eagles would regain their lead in the seventh inning with one swing of the bat, as first baseman Roman Kuntz hit a two-run home run to right field off RHP Payton Lawrence (1-1) to regain MSU's two-run advantage.

An RBI groundout by Josh Cameron in the home half, would cut into MSU's lead and saw the Redhawks trailing by a single run heading into the final two innings.

A five-run eighth inning for MSU proved to be the biggest difference in the game as an RBI single by Gooden made it 6-4 Eagles with two outs in the inning.

With the bases loaded, third baseman Isaias Guzman hit a grand slam to take a six run, 10-4, lead into the final six outs of SEMO's day.

The Redhawks were held scoreless over the final two innings, as the Eagles plated three more runs in the ninth to win the game 13-4.

LHP Logan Katen had a solid outing out of the bullpen in relief for Heyman. The left-hander pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball and struck out a pair of Eagles in the outing.

Game three of the series with Morehead State is slated for Sunday, April 28, at 1 p.m. from Capaha Field.
