CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Baseball (22-22, 10-8 OVC) dropped the third and final game of the series with Morehead State (25-19, 10-8 OVC) on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 11-8 from Capaha Field.
First baseman
Bryce Cannon paced the Redhawks offense with a 2-for-4 day with a pair doubles and four RBIs. Center fielder
Michael Mugan finished 3-for-5 with three singles as he and Cannon were the only Redhawks with a multi-hit game.
MSU's final four relievers on the afternoon held the Redhawks scoreless from the fourth inning on as RHP Trevor Callahan (4-0) picked up the Sunday victory and reliever Will Grimmett recorded his third save of the season in the series finale.
The game started quickly as five runs came across to score in the first frame combined between the teams beginning with two runs by MSU in the top half.
SEMO would quickly respond as a three-run inning, sparked by a walk to
Ben Palmer and the first of Mugan's three singles, put Redhawks on first and second with one out.
Second baseman
Brooks Kettering lined a single into left field to score Palmer for SEMO's first run of the day.
Cannon's first-of-two doubles came two batters later as his hit found the right-center field grass and hopped over the wall for a ground-rule-double. Both
Ty Stauss and Mugan scored on the play.
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the third inning, SEMO would explode for five runs in the inning.
Cannon's second double got the inning going off RHP Joe Rotkis plated Kettering and
Josh Cameron to regain the lead for SEMO. One batter later, designated hitter
Cole Warehime blasted his third home run of the season to left field for a two-run shot.
Short stop
Ben Palmer recorded a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Nolan Ackerman after the catcher's double down the right field line after the Warehime home run.
SEMO led 8-3 after the game's first three innings.
The rest of the contest was all Eagles as Morehead State responded with a four-run fourth inning via a two-run home run, an RBI double, and an RBI single all off RHP
Brian Strange to get the Eagles to within one.
A three-run sixth inning put MSU in front as an RBI double by Carson Becker scored two and a sacrifice fly of their own by Roman Kuntz gave the Eagles a 10-8 lead going to the final three innings.
MSU would tack on an insurance run in the ninth to give them a three-run advantage as they held on for the 11-8 series-deciding victory.
Looking Ahead
SEMO Baseball will be back in action on Tuesday, April 30, when they host Missouri Valley Conference-member, Evansville. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Capaha Field.
