Women's Basketball Falls 70-59 to Western Illinois Saturday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball (6-15, 3-7 OVC) fell on Saturday afternoon to Western Illinois (15-6, 6-4 OVC) by a final score of 70-59 at the Show-Me Center. 
 
Jaliyah Green paced the Redhawks offense with 19 points on 6-20 shooting, including 3-10 from three-point range, and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. As a team, SEMO shot 14-17 from the line (82.4%). 
 
Guard Kiyley Flowers chipped in a season-high 16 points for the Redhawks on Saturday afternoon. The junior from Raymore, Mo. finished 5-14 from the field and drained three, three-pointers. Flowers was also a perfect 3-3 from the charity stripe. 
 
As a team, SEMO shot 19-65 from the floor (29%), and was just 7-27 from three-point land (25%). 
 
The Leathernecks shot 24-50 from the field (48%) led by Anna Deets who finished with a game-high 21 points on 6-12 shooting. 32 of WIU's 70 points came in the paint in Saturday's contest. 
 
WIU won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Redhawks by a 40-26 margin. SEMO registered 10 offensive rebounds, converting them into eight second-chance points. 

Defensively, SEMO forced 21 Western Illinois turnovers and converted them into seven points on the offensive end. 
 
The Redhawks opened the scoring on their second possession of the game. Kiyley Flowers grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled ahead and dished out a beautiful pass to a wide-open Indiya Bowne for a corner three. 
 
Flowers continued to have an impact early in the quarter as she hit a nice pullup jump shot to give the Redhawks a 5-2 lead with 8:06 remaining. 
 
Back and forth scoring, the Redhawks and Leathernecks were in a two-point game at the first media timeout (4:17) with WIU leading 9-7. 
 
After a WIU layup by Allie Meadows, the Redhawks collected two offensive rebounds in one possession. The second offensive rebound found its way to a driving Flowers who finished through the contact and completed the three-point play with 3:25 left in the opening quarter. 
 
A Jaliyah Green jump shot gave the Redhawks a 14-11 lead before back-to-back threes from WIU gave them an 18-14 lead with just over a minute to play. 
 
Another offensive rebound, this one by Amiyah Buchanan, got the Redhawks to within two. WIU closed the quarter with a pair of free throws and led 20-16 at the end of one. 
 
The second quarter started much like the first with a Redhawks basket. Alecia Doyle drained a pull up jump shot to cut it to 20-18. 
 
The Leathernecks would then find their way to a 10-4 scoring run over the next four minutes powered by back-to-back three pointers by Anna Deets and Kaylen Reed, respectively.
 
Leading 28-20, WIU made back-to-back baskets to give the Leathernecks a 32-20 lead with 5:14 left in the second quarter. 
 
A second-chance opportunity for SEMO got the Redhawks back to their scoring ways as Jaliyah Green drained a three to cut the WIU lead to just nine with just three minutes left before halftime. 
 
Green would close the quarter with another three pointer to cut the WIU lead to just nine as halftime arrived at the Show-Me Center. 
 
At the half, SEMO was shooting just 11-37 (29.7 %) led by Jaliyah Green (4-12) who finished with 10 points. Green finished 2-5 from three-point land as the Redhawks were 3-14 as a team. 
 
The Leathernecks were led by Anna Deets who closed the half with a game-high 17 points. WIU shot 14-29 from the field (48.3%), and 5-11 from three (45.5%). 
 
The Redhawks scored the first basket of the second half, marking three-straight quarters with the first basket. Kiyley Flowers drained a three to cut the WIU lead to just six.
 
Flowers' three sparked an 8-2 run by the Redhawks to open the second half as three-straight points from Alecia Doyle and a Jaliyah Green layup got the Redhawks to within three, 41-38, with 6:44 left in the third. 
 
A layup and a free throw from WIU's Allie Meadows extended their lead back to six points. 
 
An Abbigail Stephens layup, followed by a pair of Jaliyah Green free-throws got the Redhawks back to within five with just over three minutes to play in the quarter. 
 
With the third quarter winding down, Flowers found the bottom of the net once again from three-point land as SEMO trailed 49-47 with just 1:25 left, but the Leathernecks scored the quarter's final four points to hold a 53-47 lead heading to the final quarter. 
 
A quick Amiyah Buchanan layup to start the fourth quarter, followed by a Flowers three-pointer got SEMO to within one point, 53-52, with 7:30 left in the game.  
 
Back-to-back baskets from WIU, followed by a pair of free throws pushed WIU's lead to 60-52 with just 4:16 to go, but the Redhawks would offer a comeback down the stretch. 
 
Trailing by 14 points with just over 90-seconds to go, Jaliyah Green splashed a three pointer to get the Redhawks to within 11. A pair of Flowers free-throws got the Redhawks into a single-digit deficit with 54-seconds to go. 
 
WIU would score a layup on their final possession to give the Leathernecks a 70-59 victory at the Show-Me Center. 
 
The Redhawks will be back in action on Thursday, Feb. 8, when they take on Tennessee Tech. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m., CT. at the Show-Me Center.
