CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri (4-3-2, 0-1-1 OVC) surrendered two second half goals as Eastern Illinois (2-5-2, 1-1-0 OVC) won 2-0 Sunday.
Sunday's match marked the annual Meg Herndon Donate Life Game presented by Mid-America Transplant to help honor former Redhawk Meg Herndon and bring awareness to the impacts of organ and tissue donation.
The Redhawks outshot the panthers by a 15-3 margin but were unable to find the back of the net. EIU's goalkeeper Ella Kratochivil finished the game with seven saves over SEMO's 15 shots.
SEMO continued to ask questions throughout the second half continued. Midfielder
Zoe Houston had the best look of the half from just outside the box in the 50
th minute.
Houston's shot curled just past the left post and went behind for a goal kick.
The first EIU goal came from a Redhawks penalty inside the Panthers' box. Goalkeeper
Sophia Elfrink was hurt on the play and was removed from the game prior to the penalty kick attempt.
EIU's Cami Lummus slotted home the penalty past freshman
Madison Geisler to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks were unable to register a shot before the next Panthers goal, 12-minutes later, as EIU would hold on for the 2-0 victory.
Sophomore
Zoe Houston finished with three total shots to lead the Redhawks offensively, as seven different Redhawks registered a shot on Sunday afternoon.
Forwards
Kiana Khedoo and
Justi Nelson, and
Cayla Koerner finished with two shots, including three on goal between the three of them, as SEMO was shutout for the second match in a row.
Five Redhawks played the entire 90-minute shift, including
Emma Brune,
Maddie Paulson,
Natalie Jackson,
Alayna Jakul, and
Zoe Houston.
Justi Nelson was shown a yellow card in the 73
rd minute as the game's lone card shown.
SEMO soccer will return to action this Thursday, September 28, when they head to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m., CT.
