Redhawks Begin 2023 Ohio Valley Conference Slate Friday & Saturday Versus Morehead State
Southeast Missouri volleyball (8-3, 0-0 OVC) will begin Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 22-23, against Morehead State (7-5, 0-0 OVC) as their quest for an 11th regular season OVC regular season championship begins. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Friday night, and 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau, Mo. 
 
Series History
The Redhawks and Eagles matched up last year in Morehead, Ky. in the final series of the regular season in 2022. The teams split as the Eagles won the Friday night match, 3-2 before the Redhawks would take Saturday's match, 3-0. 
 
Overall, SEMO leads the series by a mark of 33-23. 
 
Arndt & Lukens Back at it Again
Izzy Lukens and Lucy Arndt picked up Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors for their performance(s) at the KC Roos Classic this past weekend, the league announced Monday afternoon. The awards made it back-to-back weeks for each athlete and their second and third time, respectively, winning the award this season. 
 
Izzy Lukens picked up her award after registering 136 assists over the three-match weekend. She finished two matches with 51 total assists (KC & Austin Peay) and finished the tournament with a staggering 10.46 assists-per-set ratio. 
 
The Redhawks, as a team, hit .233 over the three-match weekend. Lukens also accumulated nine kills, five blocks, 30 digs, and finished with 14.5 points (1.12 PPS).
Lucy Arndt continued her impressive start to her SEMO career, picking up her third freshman of the week award in 2023. 
 
Arndt finished with 42 kills (3.23 KPS) over the three matches to lead the Redhawks in the category, including a .264 hitting percentage. She had a tournament game-high 19 kills against Austin Peay on Saturday morning. 
 
At the conclusion of the tournament, Arndt was responsible for 44.5 points including a 3.42 points-per-set mark.
 
200 Watch 
After last weekend's three-match sweep in the KC Roos Classic, head coach Julie Yankus now sits at 195 career victories after starting this season 8-3. 
 
Last Weekend
The Redhawks were last in action at the KC Roos Classic last Friday and Saturday in a tournament that saw SEMO sweep the competition and improve to 8-3 on the season. 
 
SEMO defeated Kansas City (3-2), Saint Louis (3-1), and Austin Peay on Saturday (3-1) to conclude the tournament and non-conference play. 
 
Freshman Lucy Arndt was selected as the tournament's MVP while Izzy Lukens and libero Tara Beilsmith were selected to the all-tournament team. 
 
As a team, SEMO hit .233 over the weekend thanks in large part to Lukens dishing out 136 assists finishing with 51 assists in two separate matches. 
 
Arndt led the way on the offensive, finishing her tournament with 42 kills (3.32 kills-per-set) to lead the Redhawks in the category. In the final match of the weekend, Lucy finished with 19 kills which was a tournament high to down the Governors. 
 
Scouting the Opponent
Morehead State
Morehead State comes to town coming off a 3-1 win over Eastern Michigan. Morehead went 2-1 at the Chattanooga Classic with wins over Eastern Michigan and Gardner-Webb and a loss against Chattanooga.
 
The Junior Maycie Welborn led the Eagles in kills against Eastern Michigan. Welborn had 19 kills while also recording five digs and three blocking assists.
 
Morehead State's setter Breanna Boomer registered a season high 54 assists. Boomer has 30 or more assists in eight games this season. 
 
M.E. Hargan notched a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. That is Hargan's third double-double this season.
 
Defensively, Amelia Nott recorded six blocking assists. Nott leads the team in blocking assists with 34. 
 
Morehead State has three hitters with over 100 kills this season. Welborn with a team leading 128 kills, Hollan Everett with 117 and M.E. Hargan with 110.
 
The Eagles also have three athletes with over 100 digs this season. The defensive specialist Isley Peighton with 224 digs, redshirt sophomore Shea Hefner with 103 digs, and M.E. Hargan also with 103. 
 
Looking Ahead
Southeast Missouri volleyball will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 29-30, on the road against SIUE. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Friday night, and 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Edwardsville, Ill.
