Redhawks Head to Chicago to Compete in Windy City Classsic Friday & Saturday
Southeast Missouri women's volleyball (2-1) will continue the 2023 season with their second tournament of the year when they head to Chicago, Ill. to take part in the Windy City Classic hosted by Chicago State. 
 
SEMO will begin their tournament against former Ohio Valley Conference rival, Jacksonville State at 2:30 p.m., CT. on Friday, Sept. 1. The Redhawks will conclude the tournament with their second match of the weekend on Saturday, Sept. 2, when they face the host Chicago State. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday. 
 
Series History
The Redhawks and Gamecocks are familiar foes to one another dating back to their time in the Ohio Valley Conference before JSU departed for the ASUN in 2021. 
 
SEMO and Jacksonville State have played a total of 33 times on the court including the final match of 2020-21 which saw JSU defeat SEMO 3-0. 
 
On the other side, SEMO holds a 4-1 advantage over the host of the tournament, Chicago State. The Redhawks and Cougars will meet for the sixth time on the court and the first time since 2017. In 2017, it was the Cougars picking up their first win in the head-to-head matchup 3-2. 
 
She's a Freshman
Lucy Arndt was selected as the Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the week, the league announced Monday afternoon. 
 
Arndt, a Freeport, Ill.-native, finished the 2023 SEMO Invitational with 35 kills while hitting at a .212-mark over the three matches (99 total attacks). 
 
The freshman was responsible for 45 points over the weekend and averaged 4.09 points per set in her first collegiate weekend.
 
She was also selected as a SEMO Invitational all-tournament player.
 
SEMO Invitational
The Redhawks began the season last weekend in their own tournament and went 2-1 overall losing only to Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon. 
 
SEMO got the tournament off to a great start with a 3-0 drubbing of Evansville. The Redhawks wons 26-24, 26-24, 25-23. 

Marisa Giusti made her Redhawks debut known, leading the way with 12 kills against the Purple Aces. Izzy Lukens had a season-high 35 assists from the setter spot as SEMO rolled to victory. 
 
The Redhawks continued much of the same later in the same day, as Central Michigan was next up for a Friday night showdown at Houck. SEMO bested the Chippewas 3-1 in front of a large crowd inside the field house. 
 
Freshman Lucy Arndt, who made her second career start, led the way with 14 kills to power the Redhawks to victory in four sets. Arndt finished the match with a .320 hitting percentage.
 
As a team, the Redhawks hit .264 with 45 kills on 110 total attacks compared to Central Michigan who hit just .156 as a team.
 
Zoey Beasley finished with 13 kills for the Redhawks. The Paragould, Ark.-native had 13 kills on 24 total attacks for a .333 hitting percentage.
 
SEMO dropped the final match of the tournament to Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 3-1. 
 
Tara Beilsmith finished with a team-high 30 digs on the defensive side of the net for the Redhawks. Lucy Arndt was second on the team with 17 digs. She finished with 10 kills on 43 total attacks (.163).

Scouting the Opponent
Jacksonville State
The Gamecocks opened the 2023 season with a 1-2 record at the war eagle invitational in Auburn, Alabama, with a win against McNeese and losses to Coppin State and Auburn.
 
To start the tournament the Gamecocks won a five-set thriller against McNeese. Redshirt Junior Kaylee Moseley led the team in kills with 20 on a .563 clip. 
 
Junior setter Ellie Garrett notched 54 assists while posting three blocks. Outside hitter Clarke Adams added 19 kills (.295) for the second most on JSU and notched 14 digs. 
 
Gracie Danziger led the team in digs with 19 and service aces (2) for the gamecocks. 
 
To end the tournament JSU got swept 0-3 by both Coppin State and Auburn. Adams led the Gamecocks with a total of 20 kills in the two games. 
 
Against Auburn, Garrett led the team in assists with 23 while sophomore Morgan McClure led with 15 assists against Coppin State. Danziger tallied 22 digs over both games, leading the team in both matches.
 
Last Season the Gamecocks finished with a 24-6 record (12-4 in the ASUN). Their season ended in the quarterfinals of the ASUN tournament with a loss to Kennesaw State.
 
Chicago State
The Cougars opened their season with two victories over Northern Illinois. The first game Chicago State won 3-2 and in the second game the cougars won in four sets 3-1.
 
In the first game the Cougars registered 63 kills on 176 total attempts, 55 assists, and 62 digs. 
 
The second game saw the Cougars notch 70 kills on 142 total attacks, 66 assists and 62 digs.
 
Senior Yanlis Feliz led the team in kills in both games and recorded two double-doubles. In the first game Feliz had 21 kills and 15 digs. She had 25 kills and 10 digs in the second game. 
 
Freshman outside hitter Patrycja Lagida had 15 kills in the first game. Lagida recorded her first double-double of the season in the second game with 22 kills and 10 digs. 
 
Starting setter Wiktoria Zagumny had a double-double in the first game with 45 assists and 13 digs. Wiktoria notched 57 assists in the second contest. 
 
Andrea Calderon leads the team in digs with 34 over the first two games. Calderon had 16 digs in the first game and 18 digs in the second. 
 
Chicago State is coached by Tony Trifonov. He is entering his fourth season with the cougars. 
 
Looking Ahead
Following the weekend, SEMO will head back out on the road to take part in the McNeese State Tournament in Lake Charles, La. The Redhawks will play three matches beginning on Friday, Sept. 8 against Jackson State University. First serve is slated for 10:30 a.m.
