EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southeast Missouri (11-2, 2-0) scored five points in singles play to grab a 5-2 win over SIU Edwardsville (12-4, 2-1) and take over first place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings Saturday.
SEMO and SIUE entered today's match in a tie for first before the Redhawks used their 10th win in a row to knock the Cougars out of the top spot in the league.
The Redhawks are on a 10-match winning streak for the second time under Head Coach
Mary Beth Gunn. SEMO's longest such streak with Gunn at the helm was when the Redhawks ripped off 11-straight wins in 2021.
SEMO went 5-1 in singles play to claim its big road win over the Cougars. The Redhawks were victorious in in every singles position except No. 3.
Daniela Hlacikova defeated Jill Lambrechts, 6-3, 6-0, at the top of the lineup followed by
Romana Tarajova who beat, Margaux Guibal Britt in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2. Lambrechts was the 2022 OVC Co-Player of the Year.
Vivian Lai knocked off Amelia Gorman, 6-0, 7-6, in the No. 4 spot, while Trinity Calinescu and
Teona Velkoska upended their opponents at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Both Calinescu and Velkoska battled back from second-set losses to win their three-set bouts.
Lai and Calinescu posted SEMO's only win in doubles at the No. 3 spot.
SEMO returns home to host Tennessee State on Mar. 31.
