Scouting the Opponents
Colorado College
Colorado College has won three of their first four matches to open the 2022 season. Their only loss in that span was at Utah Valley University (2-0) on August 22 after a season-opening win at UC Santa Barbara (2-1) on Aug. 18.
Most recently, CC defeated Bucknell (2-1) on Aug. 26, before securing a victory over Army (3-1) on Aug. 28 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Freshman Erin Ewers and Josie Morales swept the Mountain West Players of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Ewers was selected as the Freshman of the Week and the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals versus Army (36' & 85') and with three shots on goal. She currently is tied for the team lead with four points.
Morales was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week after she registered the game-tying goal Aug. 26 versus 2021 NCAA Tournament Team Bucknell to even the contest at 1-1. Morales played in both matches on a defense that allowed just 12 shots and two goals between the two matches.
Colorado State
CSU enters the match with a 2-1-0 (0-0-0 MWC) record with their only loss coming at the hands of PAC-12 member Utah (0-3) in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Aug. 21.
With wins on the road over Utah Tech (2-1, Aug. 18) and South Dakota (3-1, Aug. 25), the Rams will host Redhawks in their home opener on Sunday afternoon.
CSU used an offensive outburst to defeat South Dakota on Aug. 25, scoring three goals in eight minutes to secure the 3-1 victory. Kaitlyn Abrams, Aleyse Evers, and Izzy Wildermuth each scored for the Rams.
Through three games, CSU is averaging 1.67 goals per game along with nine shots per contest.
Last Time Out
Following their 2-0 loss to Missouri State on Aug. 25, the Redhawks bounced back in style as they took on Columbia College of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) at Houck Field Aug. 28. SEMO won the match 1-0 after an absolute stunning strike from redshirt junior
Megan Heisserer.
Heisserer received the ball at the top of the box and turned her shoulder before whipping the ball with her left foot past Columbia College goalkeeper Victoria Heus to give SEMO the 1-0 win.
For Heisserer, a forward from Scott City, Missouri, the goal was her first of the season (fifth in her career) and held special meaning in her long road back to the pitch. The goal Sunday was Heisserer's first since Oct. 27, 2019, after she missed the entire 2021 campaign after suffering a season-ending injury in the 2020-21 opener on March 5, 2021.
The Redhawks outshot the Cougars 12-9 with a shots on goal advantage of 8-7.
Sophia Elfrink made her fourth-consecutive start in net for SEMO registering seven saves for her second career win and shutout. She also had eight saves at Missouri State (Aug. 25).
Cayla Koerner, a freshman forward from Mahomet, Illinois, notched three shots Aug. 28 including a pair on target.
Zoe Houston, a freshman from St. Charles, Missouri, added a pair of shots on goal, her first as a Redhawk.
