CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri women's soccer utilized a pair of second half goals to draw with Central Arkansas, 2-2, Sunday afternoon in exhibition play at Houck Field.
Cayla Koerner, a freshman from Mahomet, Illinois, registered a goal and an assist Sunday as the Redhawks tied their second and final game of the 2022 preseason.
She finished with two shots on goal in 43 minutes on the pitch in her second-straight exhibition start.
Koerner cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal in the 58th minute off a feed from 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Soccer Preseason Player to Watch,
Elizabeth Rater.
For Rater, it was her second point of the preseason after notching a goal at Western Illinois on Aug. 7.
Koerner then set up the equalizer three minutes later, assisting on
Kiana Khedoo's strike at 60:32.
Khedoo, a junior from Brampton, Ontario, Canada, paced SEMO with a game-high three shots including two on target over 53 minutes Sunday.
SEMO led Central Arkansas in shots, 15-12, including 8-7 in the second half. The Redhawks also held a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Central Arkansas held an early 2-0 advantage at halftime after a pair of goals by Amanda Walsh. Walsh found the back of the net in both the 25th and 39th minute during the opening half Sunday.
Walsh led the Bears with a pair of shots on goal Sunday.
Five freshmen started for the Redhawks in goalkeeper
Sarah Pattillo, defenders
Macie Hockett and
Alayna Jakul, midfielder
Zoe Houston, and Koerner. For Hockett, Jakul, Houston, and Koerner it was their second-straight start of the preseason.
Pattillo made her first career start in net for the Redhawks during the exhibition. She finished with three saves, playing the full 90 minutes of regulation.
Keyla Perez started for UCA and made five saves. Lenja Kenstel came on in the second half and let up two goals while posting two stops.
Emma Brune and
Natalie Jackson both competed in the full 90 minutes to lead field players Sunday. For Jackson, it was her second-straight game not leaving the pitch.
Brune,
Zoey Memmel (2 SOG), and
Natalie Miller (1 SOG) all notched two shots Sunday while Jakul, and
Megan Heisserer each tallied shots on goal.
Following SEMO's 2-2 tie with Central Arkansas, the two teams competed in a penalty kick shootout. The Bears edged the Redhawks in the shootout, 5-3, making all five of their attempts.
The Redhawks next begin their 2022 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 18 in Columbia, Missouri, when they take on SEC (Southeastern Conference) member Missouri at Audrey J. Watson Soccer Stadium. First kick is slated for 7 p.m., CT.
The Redhawks then return to Cape Girardeau for their regular-season home opener at Houck Field against Illinois Springfield on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 6 p.m., CT.
